Description
Designed for an introductory software engineering course or as a reference for programmers, this up to date text uses both theory and applications to design reliable, error-free software. Starting with an introduction to the various types of software, the book moves through life-cycle models, software specifications, testing techniques, computer-aided software engineering and writing effective source code. A chapter on applications covers software development techniques used in various applications including VisualBasic, Oracle, SQLServer, and CrystalReports. A CD-ROM with source code and third-party software engineering applications accompanies the book.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐My copy of this book is copyright 2010 and far from up-to-date even for that year. The first half of this book contains brief overviews some lifecycle models, requirements, design, and testing. These chapters (1 through 8) are very high level and not anything deeper than you would expect to find on a Wikipedia article for each topic. The second half of this book, which was published in 2010, covers such antiquated topics as Windows 98 (1998), Visual Basic 6 (1998), Access 2000 (1999), Oracle 8 (1997), SQL Server 2000 (2000), and Crystal Reports 8.5 (2001). These technologies were antiques by the time this book was published in 2010 and even more so now. Out of 27 chapters in this book, only 8 of them cover topics around software engineering and testing, and those chapters are not useful. It surprises me that this book was published at all.
⭐This textbook has two parts. Part I is entitled “Software Engineering and Testing.” It is a very shallow, non-technical, and awkward description of the various software development life-cycle activities. It also has a 8-page chapter entitled “Software-Testing Strategies.” This 8-page chapter has three sections entitled “Static-Testing Strategies”, “Debugging”, and “Error, Fault, and Failure.” The 8-page chapter, its title, and its three sections speak volume about how shallow the rest of the book, entitled “Software Engineering and Testing” is.Part II is entitled “Software Development and Applications.” It is an equally shallow introduction to Visual Basic 6.0, MS Access 2000, and such.I am not critical of the authors. I just can’t believe the publisher was willing to allow such crap to be put together in a book. If the authors provide a free version of their text online, hardly anyone besides their own circle would ever consider it as useful for anything.
