Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Normally, I’m a tad wary of “For Dummies” books. Some of the offerings are truly hit-or-miss with plenty straddling some kind of semi-useful middle ground. This was totally different. The depth and breadth of the author’s experience in this subject is immediately evident and details are so salient that retaining information felt much more natural than I would have expected for such a dense expose. Chapter progression is logical, diagrams are useful and the level of nuance exposed per subject hits a kind of lovely balance between being comprehensive while simultaneously avoiding travelling too far into any sort of potential rabbit hole. The writing and phrasing is phenomenal for this level of complexity and suggests not only an extremely competent technical underpinning but a superb literary sense (extremely rare in this kind of offering). The weak points are almost not worth mentioning (kindle version had some pretty absurd misspellings for critical acronyms, Secession Initiation Protocol? Really guys?) and in general it’s become an invaluable resource for the enterprise planning I needed to be a part of for an upcoming job.
⭐Great book to bring together what you need to use a VoIP telephone system. I bought this after working on government VoIP telephone systems for 20 years and now working for a company that deploys Asterisk VoIP systems. I needed to know if things had changed or if my employer was just doing things very differently. This manual makes a lot of sense, describes what is needed for VoIP telephony deployment and how to troubleshoot and fix things that will come up. Download Wireshark, turn on QoS, manage latency, jitter and packet delay and you should be fine. Get this book to see how it should be done. This book even covers securing your network and how to prevent denial of service attacks. It also discussed how to do the right thing with taxes and long distance charges.
⭐This is a very good introduction to VoIP for someone who is getting involved with VoIP, for example by switching some lines to a VoIP provider or installing a VoIP-based office phone system. I learned a lot from it and refer to it often. However I’m withholding one star because, while the technical aspects of VoIP are introduced well, little help is given the beginner on the basic decisions about how to set up a VoIP installation, things like how to best make use of the multiple lines on most VoIP phones, or the best way to have a receptionist transfer calls. There are a lot of such rank-beginner questions when you first get involved in VoIP, and I have not found an introductory book that helps answer them.-jimc
⭐useful for learning some basics, but a lot has changed since this book was published. I recommend it as a solid primer if you are working a VoIP project for the first time.
⭐If you are a project management practitioner, involved in site conversions (VoIP delivery and implementation), having this book to reference as required—will be a wonderful addition to your project management reference library.Notable too:> Unified Communications For Dummies Tony Bradley> VoIP For Dummies Timothy V. ⭐As a pc and telecom professional I would gain spots of experience here and there at the various jobs I’ve had. This book is an excellent book to fill in a lot of those gaps that I have in my knowledge. Although I haven’t finished the book yet, there have already been a lot of “ah ha” moments where I was finally able to see the big picture of a concept or working that I had incomplete knowledge of through my work experience. A must have for anyone wanting to enter the field and for current professional who wants to bolster their knowledge.
⭐Full of great information. If you are a simple home VOIP user this will have a lot of good details but much of it will be more than you need.
⭐Doesn’t discuss cisco at all apparently. All Asterix open source stuff.
⭐I read this book as I was deploying a new VoIP installation for our company. I had some previous knowledge of and experience in VoIP, but I wanted to study it further, so I bought this book. The book presents many principles and guidelines which are essential to know as the ‘theory’, before jumping into the ‘practice’ of VoIP deployment. It briefly covers topics like network setup and optimisation, and then it extensively covers SIP messaging, testing and troubleshooting. The good points about this book (for me anyway) are that it covers many topics which are important to know to make one more VoIP-savvy. For example, it taught me about SIP re-INVITEs, which are very important to optimise the RTP (sound) path during a VoIP call. This way I discovered our VoIP provider doesn’t use re-INVITEs, so internal calls from office to office within our building go through the internet all the way to London and back! That was a major discovery and I’ve now asked our provider to look into the re-INVITE messages as a way to cut down on bandwidth usage. However, the book has some negative points as well. It mostly describes the US market and VoIP field, which in terms of actual business plans does not look much like the UK or European market (where obviously this book is also sold). It covers some very important topics too briefly, like packet shaping and traffic prioritisation. This made me want to know more (like how it is implemented and how to set this up!), so I had to spend hours looking up more info on the web – it would have been better if this information was completely contained in this book, which after all is about VoIP ‘deployment’!Finally, I found it only briefly covers perhaps the most popular VoIP server system at the moment (Asterisk) while devoting a whole chapter (and more bits of other chapters) to a proprietary packet sniffing software, something which is completely unnecessary – it could instead present more options for network monitoring and have us choose the one we like / can afford.Overall however this book has a wealth of new knowledge and I would recommend it as a starting point to anyone deploying a VoIP installation for the first time. Bear in mind however, it is only a starting point and you will need to look further after finishing this book.
⭐I needed to get a quick introduction to VOIP and what is involved…this book gave a good overview and as ever, I am pleased with the easy access that the Dummies guides provide. Recommended for newbies to VOIP technology though you will need another, more advanced book once you have the overview sorted.
⭐Covers everything one might want to consider and get the low down on before looking to deploy this technology. Each section is written in a way that means it can be read in isolation and not necessarily sequentlally.
⭐Fascinating book but something of a period piece now. Really needs bringing up to date.
⭐very US focussed
