Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐After my child was diagnosed as autistic I was looking for books that would help me with the right was of handling my child. I found this book and only on chapter 5 but have learned so much about autism and what it entails and how autism effects my child. It’s been almost a year since the doctor gave my husband and me the news and my child is calmer and happier now that we learned that structure is key. We also got an IEP for them at their school. Within the first year my child went from having major meltdown multiple times a day to only 1-3 times a week. My child is also thriving now in school now that they have the help they need. And all this positive turn around has come to be because I found this book and started using the information it provided.

⭐I’m a single dad with an autistic 18 yr old son who has go through his second sycosis just today and thank the good Lord I have read this book in the past week it has helped me out as his autism diagnosis was at the age of 17 so I getting caught up quickly with this book don’t let the name fool you it’s a play on words as this company has been around since 1980 selling books for every imaginable topic

⭐True to expectation of “For Dummies” book. Gifted to a friend with grandson just diagnosed with autism. Very helpful dissecting the information into layman’s terms.

⭐Over the past three years since we began to suspect my grandson was autistic, I have accumulated a large library on the subject. Many of the books covered or advocated specific types of treatment, or information on school special education, or finances and autism, or possible causes, or personal success stories or even stories of acceptance when success didn’t happen. This book covers them all, and more, and does it well. I’m getting another copy for my son and daughter-in-law, although by now they are experts, not dummies.. This is a really EXCELLENT contribution to the available literature on this increasingly common developmental condition. Don’t miss it!

⭐I am an Associate Clinical Director for an agency that support adults with Autism and their families. This book has been a great resource for parents who just don’t quite understand Autism. I have heard Stephen speak and was impressed by him so much I had to incorporate his book into my counseling.

⭐It’s well written by an adult who is on the Autism spectrum. He has lived through many difficulties, and shares his experiences, as well as knowledge of current treatments and research. He, also, is very encouraging to parents just beginning their journey with newly-diagnosed children with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. I’ve been fortunate to hear him speak at an Autism conference and am very impressed with his abilities. He gives us hope for the future of our own kids (including adults) with Autism.

⭐This book is excellent to get you started on autism research. I found it to be extremely good for my son’s teachers and others that may not know anything about autism at all. It covers the basics with balance between the different types of autism. I would have liked to see more on general developmental disorders like PDD-NOS but other than that it is great. My church will be using it along with several other books as a resource to get our special needs ministry started.

⭐This book was a blessing to me when I found out my son was diagnosed with Autism. It helped out so much with basic information and were to actually get help. The book also answered questions I did not even think about asking.I recommend this book to anyone who has an Autistic child/friend/love one to better help in undertanding what Autism is and how you can help.

⭐I have read several books on Autism. This is by Stephen Shore and Linda rastelli(This one has a forward by Temple Grandin but not actually written by her. )It is an easy to read well set out book, in the usual “dummies” format with points to remember and information boxes. It focuses a lot on “treatments” -several of which are not used in the UK including mercury removal and chelation and financing treatment. It also has a large focus on vaccines (which is based on controversial fraudulent research.)Again the education section is based on the US system and the advice on legal arrangements, adult living however it does have some relevant points. It is not really “a beginners guide to autism” by any means and I would not recommend giving it to family members after an autism Diagnosis. In the UK I would stick to leaflets by the NAS first.

⭐I purchased this book earlier in the year and have found some useful insights in it about living with an autistic condition both as a child and then when you enter adulthood. I have first hand experience of what its like living with such a condition, and find that the advice in this book can be useful in empowering parents to challenge hardened attitudes about autism, in siciety that sadly still exist, and i would recommend this book as a valuable tool in helping you decide which steps to take in helping your child. A word of caution, this book is written for the american market, so check out if some of the treatment programmes exist in the UK, as some of those written aboutin the book are exclusively for use in the US!

⭐As several other reviews point out, this has a large practical component but it all refers to programmes and help in the US. It suffers from the usual problems in handbooks about autism: that everyone is wired differently, and behaviour patterns can be so various that it is almost impossible to generalise except in rather depressing terms. If you were an outsider (neurotypical) wanting to understand autism and its parallel universe, it would be better to read autobiographies by people like Temple Grandin and Daniel Tammet, both of which give you a feel for what it’s like to be autistic from the inside.

⭐Sadly it’s only written by Americans for Americans. Lots of references to US branded medications & websites but nothing for the UK reader.

⭐Bought for a family member. They found informative
