Description
Beginning with an introduction to the concepts of algebraic logic, this concise volume features ten articles by a prominent mathematician that originally appeared in journals from 1954 to 1959. Covering monadic and polyadic algebras, these articles are essentially self-contained and accessible to a general mathematical audience, requiring no specialized knowledge of algebra or logic.Part One addresses monadic algebras, with articles on general theory, representation, and freedom. Part Two explores polyadic algebras, progressing from general theory and terms to equality. Part Three offers three items on polyadic Boolean algebras, including a survey of predicates, terms, operations, and equality. The book concludes with an additional bibliography and index.

⭐Reviews of the paper edition of Halmos’ classic work are readily available, and say as much as I could offer for this important work. Consequently, I’ll be focusing my remarks on the Kindle edition and its presentation, rather than the content of Halmos’ text. The Kindle edition (from Dover) contains all that the paper editions do, but there are formatting issues that make this version a little less convenient to work with. Special, mathematical symbols (such as set membership) are so tiny they are almost unreadable, and they do not change size along with the normal text when one employs that function. As a result, I was struggling with my own confusion for a little while because I actually mistook the set membership symbol for a period. Even when a full formula is embedded as a graphic, rather than as special characters, it can be very hard to read. Fortunately, with the graphics, at least, it is possible to magnify them to a more readable size.Dover knows how to do mathematical texts for the Kindle “right” — see my review of their edition of Chang & Keiser’s “Model Theory.” So they did not have to let so many basic readability issues slip through the cracks on what is, after all, one of the most important single texts in the entire topic of algebraic logic.Still, if you’re like me and do not have a lot of free space for dead trees in your abode, yet still want to have this book close to hand, the Kindle edition is worth the small monetary investment. Just be aware in advance that aspects of the text’s presentation could have been done better.
⭐Professor Halmos taught a class I took at I.U. I still remember much of his lectures. He had a patient soul…
⭐Excellent!
