Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I was surprised that even the ‘named’ neurologist wasn’t even able to clearly define what a ‘stroke’ is (or isn’t) to my ‘layman’s’ tiny brain (and particularly after a Stroke)How very helpful to have a basic, easy-to-follow book on the subject.

⭐This book addresses the many issues that confront a stroke victim from causes to treatment. It explains the mechanics of a stroke in clear, precise terms. If you are a caregiver or loved one of a stroke patient, this book will help prepare you to deal with him/her as well as your medical team. The usual glib humor often found in the “Dummies” series is replaced by a knowledgeable, compassionate voice in this volume. Thank you John R. Marler for a helpful guide. It has made dealing with my loved one’s condition more manageable.

⭐It clarified what a stroke is and how to deal with it to my non medical mind.It accurately reflected what doctors were telling me.

⭐I read this book after having lost a close friend from a stroke. Some people live and recover fully, some don’t make it, others live but have serious disabilities requiring therapy. This book is a good place to start for anyone taking care of someone with a recent stroke. The sooner the therapy begins, the better the outcome.

⭐A handy, factual book about various kinds of strokes, without a lot of detail about conflicting theories. Written in layman’s language, with cogent descriptions and useful advice.

⭐The whole “…for Dummies” series is great reference material, and this book is no exception. If you find yourself in the unfortunate circumstance of having to learn “ALL” about the subject of stroke, then buy this book! The information in it not only addressed many of my family’s concerns, but also anticipated the struggles we fumbled towards. The chapters on what happens when the patient must leave the hospital were especially helpful. At such an uncertain and overwhelming time, one needs reliable information which is easy to grasp. Reading Stroke for Dummies was like listening to a wise friend dispense trusted advice.

⭐Bought this for my father in law who recently had a stroke. He is a blue collar individual who does not read so this was a good find. I have been told that it is easy to understand and very helpful for those individuals who don’t want to earn a medical degree but want a better understanding of what to expect.

⭐My 82 year old mother had a stroke and I ordered this book for my dad to help him understand the process of what she is going through. He has raved repeatedly about the book. It is written in terms that anyone can understand. It’s a great book! Thank you to the writers.

⭐We have all seen the adverts helping us spot the most obvious and common signs of a stroke, but until my dad was struck down with a serious stroke a few weeks ago, I had had no real idea just how much of an impact a stroke can have and just how many body functions that we take for granted are affected. This book is comprehensive in that it explains everything you could want to know about what a stroke is, to all the procedures/operations that might need to be done, to all the possible rehab needs and much more. The best part is that it explains things in layman’s terms – for the first time, I felt like I really began to understand what my dad was going through and what he had had done. As lovely as all the medics have been, they do sometimes forget that us normal folk don’t understand all the technical terms. The book also has a section for loved ones, where it talks realistically about the patient’s condition and what may need to happen if they are too poorly to make their own decisions or need an awful lot of care. There is nothing frightening or upsetting in the way that information has been presented, it has the right balance of realism whilst being calm – exactly the sort of thing you need! One thing to be cautious of is that this book is a US edition – references to calling 911, medical insurance etc – but anyone with a bit of common sense can apply their country-specific knowledge to these areas as well as work alongside medics, social workers etc to get the best of their situation. This does not change the star rating, as the book is brilliant, just something to be aware of.Whilst many people who buy this book are likely to be those affected by a stroke (patient or loved one) or someone who works on a stroke ward, this is a book worth looking into having alongside your general medical encyclopedias at home. It has great extensive information on how to prevent strokes and I can assure you that £10-£15 on this book is much cheaper than all the costs associated with dealing with a relative in hospital who has had a stroke. This review was written on a day where it was reported in the news that the NHS is suffering from a lack of stroke consultants. Of course, there are factors which are outside our control in determining our risk of a stroke, but there are many things we could look into in reducing our own risk or educating ourselves to spot the signs sooner so someone can get specialist help quicker. I just wish I had known more sooner.

⭐This book has been incredibility useful and informative, so much so I feel it should be compulsory reading for every individual, not just so you recognise the sign of stroke or impending stroke in yourself or another & why acting quickly is crucial but importantly how you avoid having one in the first place. The clear descriptions and explanations of the 2 very different types of strokes which may strike, and each of their subdivisions, will put clear in your mind the symptoms which differ between the two and as each is caused by a different issue so too is the treatment very different. I’m not one to often use clichés, but would say, no stone is left unturned in this book, all your questions will most likely be answered. My profession means I am fairly knowledgeable about nutrition, health and how a body functions in general, but until last week, when I found my 85 year old mother lying on her floor, clearly having suffered a stroke, I realise how little I know about this common event, except that we all know the FAST mnemonic for stroke. The book is very comprehensive, just “look inside” above at the expanded contents, as opposed to the shortened at a glance contents. This has been such a helpful read for what has happened in my mother’s brain, what to expect, what may lie ahead and what is happening at the hospital & why, rehabilitation, what to do for a loved one returning home and so forth. I have not felt the fact this is written by an American doctor for the American market has in any way undermined the content for us here in the UK, indeed the meat and potatoes, or should I say oily fish and salad, of the content are relevant to any country on the globe, hospital protocols may vary but you can interpolate and equate with our system in the UK. Very well written in an engaging manner, clearly laid out, information builds upon information, excellent diagrams.John R Marler M.D. has done a splendid job of taking a complicated and often technical subject and explaining clearly.Additionally, I also read how high blood pressure, so critical in your chances of stroke occurring, be meticulously & vigilantly controlled. The book points out how dangerous missing even one day of your HBP tablets can cause a spike in HBP, and you can then have a red stroke, a bleed in or on the outside of the brain, as opposed to a white stroke, caused by a clot in the brain. I have put the fear of God into my husband, who seems to run out of his HBP tabs on a regular a basis before getting round to picking up his next prescription. I don’t think he will be doing that anymore.I end this review by saying again, everyone should read this book. If you have elderly parents, it’s a must have, watch for vascular dementia caused by tiny strokes & Tia’s, bigger strokes are likely on the way. If I had read this book a few years ago, I now see I might have recognised impending signs some years back, of the stroke my mother had last week. Take heart, you can reduce your risk of stroke significantly by looking after yourself. It’s the first time I have heard a doctor saying you own your body and you should take the responsibility of looking after it, a thought I have often had myself, but looking at the state of our nation now, not one a large proportion of the public even consider – for example why would someone who has had stents fitted continue eating the very diet that caused the need for them being fitted in the first place & not embark on an exercise regime after such a wake up call, is it not a golden opportunity to change your lifestyle and give yourself the best possible chances for a healthy old age & future. I liked that he furnished you with all the info to do just that by getting to the root of the causes instead of offering sticking plasters to patch over problems.Highly recommend, well done Dr Marler.

⭐Well written in plain talk, answered lots of questions about my stroke.I recommend this book to survivors and carers.

⭐I had a brain hemorrhage a year ago and still found this book very useful reference material. It even reminded me to resume taking Lipitor!

⭐Fantastic book! Very clear and easy to digest.Very helpful in my dad’s time of need.Grateful is an understatement
