⭐This influential work, published in 1951 by Sir David Ross, was the standard work on the subject for many years. The author is generally considered to be the 20th century’s greatest Aristotle scholar, but he obviously knew his Plato as well. The book is out-of-print and a decent copy at a good price may be hard to find. I will list a few guidelines for potential purchasers.(1) This book is not for beginners. It was written for advanced students and scholars of Plato. Sir David makes liberal use of untranslated Greek phrases, but a determined reader can usually figure out his meaning. Plato’s metaphysics is difficult, abstract, and frequently obscure. Ross’s book certainly helps, but it is sometimes a slow and arduous journey. Especially taxing are the chapters on Plato mathematical speculations, surely of minimal interest to most Plato students.(2) Ross casts a wide net concerning Plato’s dialogues. He analyzes all of the relevant material as it relates to the book’s subject. The author is nothing if not comprehensive.(3) The book addresses all of the important Plato scholarship of the first half of the 20th century, especially that of the eminent Platonists H. Cherniss and A.E. Taylor.(4) One thing bothers me, and this criticism pertains not only to Ross but to Plato scholarship in general. Ross sometimes says that Aristotle’s interpretation of Plato is plainly wrong. Now Aristotle was Plato’s most famous student, and studied under the master for 20 years. And Aristotle, one of the most important philosophers in the history of the subject, surely knew his master’s views. And yet Ross at several places blames Aristotle for getting Plato wrong! I find this hard to swallow. My several criticisms should not seriously diminish the overall value of this fine book. I have a soft spot in my heart for the older ancient Greek scholarship and therefore highly recommend this work for those with a serious interest in Plato. Now if I can just find a cheap copy of any book written by H. Cherniss.
⭐”In 1948 the Queen’s University, Belfast, did me the honour of appointing me to deliver the Memorial Lecture established in memory of the notable historian of ancient thought, Sir Samuel Dill.I WELCOMED THE OPPORTUNITY OF SAYING SOMETHING ABOUT PLATO’S THEORY OF IDEAS, at which I had been working for some time, and the substance of the lecture is embodied in the final chapter and in other parts of the present book.I have not thought is necessary, as a rule, to print in the original Greek passages from Plato and other Greek writers, but have been content to translate or to use a good existing translation…..”[from the book of the preface by W. D. R.]
⭐This book by Sir David Ross is, for me, the best account of Platos’s famous theory of Ideas. The author goes back to Plato’s earlyer dialogues and gives a detailed exposition of how the doctrine developed all through the dialogues, how were took the teachings of Socrates and how Plato gave to it full consistence. Especially fine is his account of the Parmenides, one of Plato’s mature works. This is, may be, the most difficult of all the dialogues and Ross sheds real clarity on it. This is the book if one wants to get to know Plato’s philosophy through his central root. It really helped me in my first readings of the divine Plato.
