⭐Marenbon’s text was an effort to introduce a new way of studying the medievals. Instead of isolating and then employing their individual arguments (like the analytic tradition) or applying their thought to problems of today (like the Neo-Thomists), Marenbon sought a more historical approach to ground the reader in a place and culture and then explain how the philosophy was a response to questions of that age.I cannot say his effort was entirely successful. The analytic tradition and Thomists at least have been to argue for medieval philosophy’s present day relevance. Marenbon makes the scholastics as dry as a manual.While it is helpful to know how universities differed in that time and why so many tomes were devoted to the question of universals, the contemporary reader, even the most philosophically inclined, first has to be engaged with the thinkers in question to capture her attention.Too boring for the beginner and too simple for the specialist, handing undergraduates a copy of Late Medieval Philosophy is sort of like handing them Plato’s Parmenides. They will first ask what is he talking about and then why should I care?Etienne Gilson’s Spirit of Medieval Philosophy, still in print, is a much more suitable introduction. In short, there is a reason why this book has faded into obscurity.
