Description

In The Theorist’s Mother one of our subtlest literary theorists turns his attention to traces of the maternal in the lives and works of canonical male critical theorists. Noting how the mother is made to disappear both as the object of theory and as its subject, Andrew Parker focuses primarily on the legacies of Marx and Freud, who uniquely constrain their would-be heirs to “return to the origin” of each founding figure’s texts. Analyzing the effects of these constraints in the work of Lukács, Lacan, and Derrida, among others, Parker suggests that the injunction to return transforms the history of theory into a form of genealogy, meaning that the mother must somehow be involved in this process, even if, as in Marxism, she seems wholly absent, or if her contributions are discounted, as in psychoanalysis. Far from being marginalized, the mother shows herself throughout this book to be inherently multiple and therefore never simply who or what theory may want her to be. In a provocative coda, Parker considers how theory’s mother troubles will be affected retroactively by scientific advances that make it impossible to presume the mother’s gender.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I wrote a long critique of this book inexplicably deleted by Amazon where I criticized the poor scholarly value of the book and especially the complete ideologically biased and unreasonable hypothesis that Yiddish is the “language of Marxism”. Parker bases his interpretation of Marx on the first paragraph of the 18th Brumaire by Marx completing misunderstanding th Germna meaning of the words used by Marx in relationship to the “mother tongue” which according to Parker is literally the “language spoken by Marx’s mother. The first authored book by a professor who has been teaching for over 30 years. This should say it all about the intellectual reliability of Parker.

⭐Read this book. If you are interested in philosophy, literature, gender studies, this book should be on your list. Andrew Parker has a unique and rare insight for literature and philosophy. While his voice is very analytical and rhetorical, he also maintains an entertaining style. How do we think of maternity and philosophy in conjunction? Before reading the book, I have never reflected much about how the role of mother is altering in today’s world, and how these literary theorists such as Freud and Derrida acknowledge the maternal implicitly and at times inadvertently in their theories and works. Andrew Parker responds to this question with a deep analysis, using a large-scale bibliography. The passages that are used throughout the book to think about the ways in which mother plays a role in theorist’s life are carefully chosen and promise to be interesting. Overall, this scholarly work is a fabulous achievement.
