About the Author Frederick Copleston (1907-1994) grew up in England. He was raised in an Anglican home but converted to Catholicism while a student at Marlborough College. He later became a Jesuit and then pursued a career in academia. He studied and lectured at Heythrop College and wrote an eleven-volume History of Philosophy, which is highly respected. He also spent time teaching at Gregorian University in Rome and, after he retired, lectured at Santa Clara University in California. He was appointed a member of the British Academy in 1970. He is famouse for debating Betrand Russell over the existence of God in a 1948 BBC broadcast. Read more

⭐My Credentials:I’m merely a student of philosophy, not a teacher, so I can hardly speak from a scholarly position. However, I have read Copleston through the eighth volume, and so I would freely refer to myself as a vetern of his work; I know its strengths and weaknesses.Review:The volume opens with an impressive account of utilitarian philosophy, and carries on to cover a variety of empiricist and agnostic philosophers.The entries on Bradley, Bosanquet and the British idealists seem a bit excessive, whereas the writings on Emerson are minimal and Thoreau is given a one line mention. It may be that I speak from an American bias.Pragmatism is covered in fair measure, followed closely be a well-rounded exposition on the analytic movement and Russell. Admittedly, Copleston devolves toward the close of the work. His biography of Russell is scattered throughout all three sections on the philosopher, and his conclusion should be renamed “scattered notes on Wittgenstein and neo-positivism,” both of which are poorly covered.Some non-thematic notes about this volume. Copleston begins adding a noticeable amount of British slang (nothing that can’t be found quickly through Google, mind you).

⭐Copleston is one of the best sources for history of philosophy. I would recommend it to anyone for a clear & informative source for any period of philosophy!

⭐It’s too bad he didn’t get further in his history. There is nothing to compare — even vaguely — to anything he wrote for the periods he covered, No other historian of philosophy is worth mentioning.

⭐This book covers some important developments in philosophy in Britain in the nineteenth century, and for some philosophers extending well into the twentieth century. Utilitarianism and empiricism were discussed, as well as the related pragmatism of the Americans Pierce, James and Dewey. Other elements of American philosophy were also discussed. There was an important element of idealism that flourished in the nineteenth century in Britain, and then declined with the twentieth that Copleston considers. In part, this trend in philosophy was related to Kant and Hegel. Analytic philosophy became very prominent in Britain with the work of Moore, Russell and Wittgenstein. Copleston discusses the philosophical work of Moore and Russell fairly thoroughly, but is somewhat superficial in his considerations of Wittgenstein. I think that Copleston’s comments are helpful, and also his consideration of minor philosophers whose work is largely forgotten today. Copleston manages to provide a fairly good point of view for nineteenth century British philosophy, and the growing importance of philosophical work in the U.S. I think the book is worth reading for the beginning student of philosophy for perspective, and I recommend it from that point of view.
