⭐The nine-volume “A History of Philosophy” by Frederick Copleston is an excellent and comprehensive introduction to a vast store of material. Well-written, lucid, and on the whole readily understandable, it has become a classic in the field. Volume 3, which covers “Late Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy,” is no exception.Volume 3 is particularly important because it covers a period in the history of Western intellectual thought that is often overlooked (or at least given short shrift) in the teaching of the history of philosophy. Part 1 of Volume 3 primarily covers William of Ockham (in six chapters), with a chapter devoted to Marsilius of Padua and another to Speculative Mysticism. Once one has read this volume he should be convinced that the period covered is not an unimportant parenthesis in the history of Western thought but is a crucial bridge between the height of medieval scholasticism and the advent of modern philosophy. Copleston certainly brings this period to life.
