⭐In “Critique of Western Philosophy and Social Theory”, author-professor-philosopher-across-the-ages David Sprintzen provides a surprisingly broad yet detailed tour of the history of ideas, of the development of consciousness, self-consciousness and freedom, of the development and functions of individuals and social relationships, and of the evolution of human nature from pre-humans to modern humans, inviting each reader to soar like an eagle over great philosophical distances with vision keen enough to see an impressive almost shocking amount of detail during the journey. Sprintzen’s Critique is not just a travelogue of great and virtually timeless ideas but an interwoven fabric that constitutes a new intellectual framework. It challenges and guides readers to think like they’ve never thought before as it transforms the current/prevalent world view of things and people and events-based-on-things-and-people into a world of things, people, hierarchies, emergent properties, event-guiding-field-interactions and a fabric of interconnectedness that by far can be best understood by reading this book, if possible within the context of a book club, informal discussion group or college course, so that its many new combinations of ideas and merged-viewpoint-combinations benefit from multiple perspectives and value systems that only group discussion can provide. [Earlier this year this book generated lively discussion after being chosen for the February book-of-the-month meeting at the Sherman (CT) Library.] The title certainly does not do the book justice. Much more than providing a critique, Dr. Sprintzen gives readers an attractive, indeed compelling replacement philosophical framework based on the most current scientific and social-scientific insight. In part because it offers 297 endnotes, including some that are by themselves one and a half pages in length, it can serve as an ideal textbook for introductory and advanced [hierarchy and field theory-based] philosophy courses. It is much more provocative than a typical textbook because it both questions and proposes replacements for core aspects of traditional religious and scientific thought. And it is more action-oriented than most textbooks, having many action-related sections and chapters that illustrate how natural laws, personal viewpoints, social context and actions are inevitably linked, including “Remaking the World”, “The Withering of the Dream”, “Our Tragic Condition and Mythological Fantasies”, “Practical Ethics” and “Reflections for the Twenty-First Century”. This book effortlessly (and delightfully) transcends philosophical, social and natural scientific realms while maintaining a level of scholarship suitable for university and professional/research discussions. Lay readers can also enjoy the tour it provides, especially if a dictionary or Google access is nearby. It is a real mind-opener, in many dimensions and from many perspectives.Rolf MartinBioinformatics DirectorMMT CorporationSherman, CT

⭐David Sprintzen has put forward his magnum opus, Critique of Western Philosophy and Social Theory. This is a brilliant book, the scope of which spans thehistory of Western-based philosophy, religion, evolution, modern physics, psychology, sociology and politics. Sprintzen deftly wraps his mind and soul around these diverse fields and creates a systems view of life. He deeply understands that human beings are fragile and vulnerable and are challenged to make sense out of their world as they experience their finite nature. He calls upon us to discard the myth-making constraints of anxiety-based religion and to employ scientific knowledge and community building to take care of our families, societies, the Earth and our Selves. This book is written by a college professor/social activist who lives not in ivory tower ideals but on the ground, promoting progressive causes on the local level. In approaching this work I braced myself for an overload of abstract, dense writing. Instead, I found a very readable, easy to digest book written with great skill and from the heart. Sprintzen grapples with a very wide swath of knowledge and successfully weaves a magnificent tapestry. If you are person seeking the meaning of life, read this book, tell your friends about it, discuss the ideas and carry them forward to change your world.

⭐Just a quick note to let you know that I have been using your wonderful book in my graduate course in liberal studies (LS 810: “Self and Society”) this term. It was the final book in a five book series that ran from Rousseau’s two discourses, to Dewey’s “Human Nature and Conduct,” to Freud’s “Civilization and its Discontents,” to Arendt’s “The Human Condition,” to Ernest Becker’s “Escape from Evil,” and finally to your “Critique of Western Philosophy and Social Theory.” The remainder of the course now will consist of student discussions about the current state of play in the self-society dialectic as grounded in contemporary America and Canada. It was also a very good thing that the paperback copy of your book was available for purchase. The students loved what you had to say and already have gotten into some great discussions about various ways of working with some of your ideas — several of them are involved in social interest groups and organizations and many are politically active at municipal, provincial, and national levels.Jack Martin, Professor of Psychology and Liberal Studies at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia.
