Description

Donald Davidson (1917-2003) was one of the most important philosophers of the late twentieth century. His work on language and the theory of meaning has been particularly influential. Two of the world’s leading authorities on Davidson’s philosophy, Ernest Lepore and Kirk Ludwig, provide a systematic exposition of his work in this field and of his contributions to philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and epistemology which spring from it. Their second aim is to assessDavidson’s program critically, to mark its successes, but also to identify where its ccomplishments fall short of its ambitions, and, since it is an on-going research program, to assess its prospects for the future, and to contribute to the expansion of that program.Criticizing and extending Davidson’s thought, as well as providing an introduction to it, Lepore and Ludwig address a broad academic audience. Their work will be of fundamental importance for those who are coming to Davidson’s work for the first time; while some philosophical sophistication and training is presupposed, it is accessible both to advanced undergraduates and to graduate students. It will also be welcomed by professional philosophers, linguists, and anyone wishing to assess andunderstand Davidson’s remarkable intellectual legacy.

⭐Published in 2005 by Oxford University Press, ‘Donald Davidson: Meaning, Truth, Language and Reality’ is the first of two volume by Ernie Lepore and Kirk Ludwig examining the philosophical thought of Donald Davidson. The current volume examines Davidson’s attempt to provide a theory of meaning for natural languages and some of the metaphysical and epistemological issues arising from this project. (Its sister volume ‘Donald Davidson’s: Truth-theoretic Semantics’ delves into the issue in greater detail). Lepore and Ludwig are well known Davidsonian scholars. The current text is divided into three sections;1. Truth-theoretical semantics,2. Radical interpretation, and3. Metaphysics and epistemology.Potential readers are advised to refer to the detailed table of contents available via the ‘look inside’ function for further information regarding the specific content.I offer the following thoughts for potential readers. First, the text is geared toward readers familiar with Davidson and, as such, does little to situate the non-expert. This is particularly, unfortunate with regard to the early part of the text centered on learnable languages and theories of meaning. Readers new to Davidson may benefit from the front section of Scott Soames’ article ‘Truth and Meaning – In Perspective’ (available on-line). Soames provides an excellent short overview of the intellectual backdrop within which Davidson wrote. Second, though in general Lepore and Ludwig are helpful in casting light on Davidson’s work, their writing is often mechanistic and plodding; characterized, amongst other things, by an excess of interim summaries and introductions, e.g. we will argue that…, we have argued that … and the like. While structure is essential to effective academic writing – it can be overdone. That said, these are relatively minor quibbles with an otherwise excellent text. ‘Truth, Meaning, Language and Reality’ is a welcome addition to Davidsonian scholarship and well worth a look for students of Davidson.

⭐Not easily understood
