Description

David and Mary Norton present the definitive scholarly edition of one of the greatest philosophical works ever written. This first volume contains the critical text of David Hume’s Treatise of Human Nature (1739/40), followed by the short Abstract (1740) in which Hume set out the key arguments of the larger work; the volume concludes with A Letter from a Gentleman to his Friend in Edinburgh (1745), Hume’s defence of the Treatisewhen it was under attack from ministers seeking to prevent Hume’s appointment as Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Hume’s Treatise upon Human Nature is one of the great works of philosophy. Its topics range over the whole of human nature: our understanding / reason; our passions; and our moral sentiments (which includes politics). Its arguments are frequently difficult but reward close study. And not infrequently, Hume writes with a grace and power that are hard to match (some passages have become famous–even though they don’t actually quite express Hume’s full view). This is the definitive edition of Hume’s work. It is quite expensive. It comes in two volumes: vol 1 is the text of the Treatise; vol 2 includes the notes, bibliography, and indexes. The work also comes in paperback or hardback. The paperback is a flimsy production that will quickly fall apart if used intensively. For that reason, it is worth investing in the hardback. It is not a well-made book–it does not have a sewn binding but only the so-called perfect binding (i.e., glued) in hard board covers. But it is likely to make it through an intensive reading in one piece. A non-specialist is, I think, not likely to use the second volume very much, but only to refer to it occasionally. One could get away with paying for the cheaper paperbound book for that volume. But I really encourage serious readers to pop for the hardback of volume 1. This is a book a serious read will read and re-read and want to keep permanently. And given their durability and wealth of content, books are still one of the cheapest pleasures offered to the human mind. So trust me, it’s worth it to buy the hard back.

⭐Excellent version of Hume’s classic text. A good introduction, but intended for more than a general reader.

⭐As text, this is a excellent, but there is no analitical index by L.A.Selby -Beggie published by Oxford Claredon press First Edition 1888.I think the index is critical to undestand this thesis.

⭐In an earlier version of this review I wrote: “Note that this title does not work on all Kindle software. In particular, it does not work on Android phones or tablets. Buyer beware!” The product description now says that it works on Android tablets. If that is true, I withdraw my objection.

⭐excellent translation – clear and understandable – high quality book – this is the one to own for the foreseeable future

⭐Great.

⭐GOOD TRANSLATION AND LAYOUT.

⭐Quality Book (Remark: often deliveries from Amazon, who uses DHL, is sent to the wrong address, and I have to follow up DHL by phone, to redirect the delivery, or else I will not receive it. I suggest that Amazon and Amazon’s subcpntractors, including in Polan, stop using DHL)(Stein Smaaland (stein.smaaland@sys.no)

⭐David Hume’s Treatise is one of the most brilliant philosophical works ever written. The author was only 27 when he published it in 1739. However, the kind of empiricism described therein is deep, mature, stunningly comprehensive (encompassing crucial topics in epistemology, psychology, and morals) and amazingly modern. This critical edition includes a first volume containing the original work by Hume (plus the Abstract and the Letter from a Gentleman) and a second volume containing a historical account of the book, a rich set of editor’s annotations, several other editorial remarks, an extensive bibliography, and detailed and accurate indexes.

⭐It is very useful to have a text of the Treatise with Hume’s intended corrections. And for a text you are likely to want to read carefully, re-read and perhaps annotate, it is good to have a book printed on high quality paper. I am happy enough to work with an electronic version of volume 2 (the Notes), but for the text itself, nothing beats the hard copy.

HaraldI like the timeliness of arrival. I have no complaint.
