British philosopher and mathematician BERTRAND ARTHUR WILLIAM RUSSELL (1872-1970) won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. Among his many works are Why I Am Not a Christian (1927), Power: A New Social Analysis (1938), and My Philosophical Development (1959).

⭐The kindle edition is badly formatted, with footnotes indistinguishable from body text. Don’t bother.

⭐This is a very capable, clearly written review of Leibnitz’s philosophy, the best thing about it is the numerous and well chosen excerpts from Leibnitz himself which frankly allows one not to have to plough through all of Leibnitz’s work. I have no interest in Leibnitz’s general philosophy which is outdated but Leibnitz as a physical theorist was way ahead of his time and, on several points, ahead of Newton. Leibnitz spotted the weakest point of Newton’s gravity theory (instantaneous transmission and lack of a mechanism) and Leibnitz, rather than Newton, anticipates the modern focus on energy rather than force. A very useful book.
