Editorial Reviews: From Library Journal This is a peculiar combination of history, philosophy, literary criticism, and cultural anthropology. Todorov (On Human Diversity: Nationalism, Racism, & Exoticism in French Thought, Harvard Univ. Pr., 1993), Maitre de Recherches at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris, discusses a broad spectrum of seemingly unrelated topics: the treatment of Bulgaria in French literature, contacts between various cultures around the world, the relation of truth to fiction and lies, problems encountered by democracy, and the role of intellectuals in modern society. Though not easy reading, the book does offer numerous fascinating observations. One theme tying together the essays is a plea for ethics and values in the modern world in the face of science and dehumanizing forces. Todorov urges intellectuals to play a larger public role to reveal and enhance the importance of morality and communal ideals, as opposed to strictly private rights and interests. For informed readers.?T.J. Schaeper, St. Bonaventure Univ., N.Y.Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. From the Back Cover The celebrated theorist Tzvetan Todorov offers here a thought provoking study of the complex relationship between ‘ethics’ and ‘history’. In exploring such issues as how one practices and assesses equality among different societies, Todorov confronts topics ranging from the conquest of America and nineteenth-century colonialism, to democracy and conflicts of the Self versus the Other. About the Author Tzvetan Todorov is a philosopher and literary theorist. He was born in Bulgaria and has lived in France since 1963.
