Description

George Berkeley was an idealist and an extraordinarily eloquent man of letters. Yet his views are traditionally regarded as wild and extravagant. He is well known for his departure from common sense, yet perversely represents himself as siding with ?the common folk’, presenting a complex challenge for students. Berkeley: A Guide for the Perplexed covers the whole range of Berkeley’s philosophical work, offering an accessible review of his views on philosophy and common sense and the nature of philosophical perplexity, together with an examination of his two major philosophical works, The Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous. Geared towards the specific requirements of students who need to have a sound understanding of Berkeley’s thought, the book provides a cogent and reliable survey of the various concepts and paradoxes of his thought. This is the ideal companion to the study of this most influential and challenging of philosophers.

⭐Berkeley I have a surprise for you. After reading this book you’re gonna be even more perplexed.A person who is perplexed needs Berkeley’s position EXPLAINED, not compared to other philosophers. A perplexed reader isn’t perplexed because they aren’t aware of other philosophers opinions. Readers of Berkeley are perplexed because they don’t understand him.The author’s title was very misleading, in my opinion. Having read the book I am just as perplexed as before I started.I decided to underline explanatory comments regarding Berkeley’s thoughts. By the time I was finished it appears that roughly one-tenth of the book referred to Berkeley.Way too much commentary regarding the thinking of other philosophers. This wasn’t what the title of the book advertised, at least to me.I wish somebody would write a book titled BERKELEY MADE EASY, or BERKELEY FOR DUMMIES, and say NOTHING about what other philosophers have to add, for or against Berkeley’s view.I am very disappointed. I feel I was misled by the title of the book. I suggest the title be changed to reflect the book contains ALOT of commentary of many other philosophers.Other than the above the book had no grammatical errors that I noticed. What the author did have to say about Berkeley was of some help, but not enough to explain his position. I did appreciate that the author had end notes as well as an index of subjects.Maybe it’s me. Maybe I am a person who doesn’t learn by COMPARING other points of view. This is a possibility. I just figured that a book with PERPLEXED in its title would be 100% focused on teaching and explaining Berkeley’s Immaterialism.Any potential buyer who treasures learning by comparing other philosophical opinions then this book will work out fine for them, in my opinion. I have no doubt they will enjoy this book. I just can’t learn that way. So I walk away just as perplexed as before.A better title would have been BERKELEY DEFENDS HIS PHILOSOPHY AGAINST OTHER PHILOSOPHERS.As I said above, this rating isn’t so much a negative one, rather, it reflects my disappointment that the book didn’t accommodate the way I learn and comprehend philosophy.
