Description

This is an excellent book on dual model and string theories. This updated issue of the author’s book ‘Dual Resonance Models’ has new chapters on string theories added to it. This new volume therefore provides much background on the non-symmetrical aspects as well as modern development in the theory of strong interactions. This is a must for high energy physicists.

⭐This monograph details the origins of string theory in nuclear physics of the ’60s and early ’70s. Chew’s Bootstrap Program in S-matrix theory and Regge theory play a key role. The young physicist,Veneziano, discovers while searching for a mathematical function that satisfies Chew’s criteria for the hadronic S-matrix, that the Euler beta function (the same one derived from the analyst’s gamma function) just about does it. The only criterion not satisfied is unitarity. Dr. Frampton then details Veneziano’s successful applications of this function. In chapter four, the Nambu string/worldsheet model is introduced (actually a manifold, describing the bosonic string nowadays). This model had its origin as a proposed quark confinement mechanism. Calculation rules analogous to Feynman rules are derived from this model and are shown to reproduce the Euler beta function! You can see the origin of today’s topological theories here and you sense there are riches yet to be mined. The mathematics is derived for the case at hand most of the time assuming just the typical undergraduate background like commutators, Lie algebras, etc. For the material described and the fact that the flavor of the subject is conveyed without “it can be shown”s and references to “it can be shown”s makes it a 5star.
