Description

During its forty year lifespan, string theory has always had the power to divide, being called both a ‘theory of everything’ and a ‘theory of nothing’. Critics have even questioned whether it qualifies as a scientific theory at all. This book adopts an objective stance, standing back from the question of the truth or falsity of string theory and instead focusing on how it came to be and how it came to occupy its present position in physics. An unexpectedly rich history is revealed, with deep connections to our most well-established physical theories. Fully self-contained and written in a lively fashion, the book will appeal to a wide variety of readers from novice to specialist.

⭐A Brief History of String TheorySpringer Verlag Berlin HeidelbergRe: Joseph Grenier MD PhDThis is a good textbook tracing the origin of string theory in physical scientific studies. The theory in the early 1960s is followed to the present days of 2000’s. The necessity to create a unified theory of particle dynamics in the submicroscopic world is explored. The growth of particle dynamics theories is analyzed further with reference to the Yang-Mills gauge theories. The origin of supersymmetry, superstring theory is described. A very careful credit to all the researchers involved in particle physics and its further development is catalogued throughout the pages of this historical landmark. This book will be of great value to physicists at all levels of training, including graduate students and postdocs. It is a milestone in historical research.Dirac’s notions and equations are followed up to Feynmann’s contributions to particle dynamics. The multidimensional nature of string theory is credited with the major contributors and their mathematical innovations. Students will have a greater appreciation of the field of string theory from its origins to the evolution of thought. Supergravity theory is also studied in one of the major sections of this book.
