Description

This introduction to classical mechanics and thermodynamics provides an accessible and clear treatment of the fundamentals. Starting with particle mechanics and an early introduction to special relativity this textbooks enables the reader to understand the basics in mechanics. The text is written from the experimental physics point of view, giving numerous real life examples and applications of classical mechanics in technology. This highly motivating presentation deepens the knowledge in a very accessible way. The second part of the text gives a concise introduction to rotational motion, an expansion to rigid bodies, fluids and gases. Finally, an extensive chapter on thermodynamics and a short introduction to nonlinear dynamics with some instructive examples intensify the knowledge of more advanced topics. Numerous problems with detailed solutions are perfect for self study.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “This huge volume … is intended as an introductory experimental physics course, devoted to various aspects of mechanics and thermodynamics. … Author may prove attractive to the mathematically oriented audience as well (including not only students but professional scholars as well). … Each chapter is followed by a list of references … that may enhance the understanding of topics discussed. … Solutions to all of them are collected in the special chapter.” (Piotr Garbaczewski, zbMATH 1364.00024, 2017) From the Back Cover This introduction to classical mechanics and thermodynamics provides an accessible and clear treatment of the fundamentals. ⭐Springer was offering this, and many other books, for free download during the pandemic last year.I read parts of the book to refresh my knowledge of intro physics, and this book is a gem. It is reminiscent of the 3 volume book series by Alonso/Finn, and not the later dumbed down single book. These volumes are the best introductory physics book ever written (for average/gifted students). Some would say Feynman, but it lacks exercises, and Feynman is better understood once one has seen a more basic presentation. However, the three volumes by Alonso/Finn are extremely pricey. So this book is a godsend. It is extremely clear, problems range from easy to challenging, each section ends with a suggested reading for those students wanting to go into more detail. Math is used, and is not avoided like the plague. Cough, Gincolli, Cough Serway, Cough Resnik, Cough Knight Cough etc. Images and graphics are crisp, notation is nicely formatted, it is easy to reference past results, the layout of book does not appear busy so it makes it easy on the eyes. Moreover, brief biographies of important people of physics sprinkled throughout.
