Description
Statistical Mechanics is the extended version of McQuarrie’s earlier text – Statistical Thermodynamics (USB 1984). This text (previously published by Longman Education) is an accessible introduction to the subject. It contains a large number of problems at the end of each chapter to help students understand the material and to introduce them to selected extensions.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “It is worth twice the price and will prove to be an invaluable reference tool. It has fantastically detailed problems and solutions. I can’t say enough good things about this book.”–Amazon.com”This is the Bible of Stat Mech. It is a must-have for any person studying in the field of Statistical Mechanics.”–Amazon.com About the Author DONALD A. McQUARRIE, University of California, Davis
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This is by far one of the best written books I’ve ever been recommended to buy. Statistical mechanics in itself can be a bit difficult to understand, but McQuarrie is one of the best authors I have come across. I’d definitely recommend this book because it really goes in depth with explaining stat mech but in such a way that you’ll be able to follow!
⭐Standard text on equilibrium stat mech with good coverage of the basics in the 1st half of book. A bit dated on the presentation overall though. Anyone who loved McQuarrie’s PChem text (I love that big red book!) will be a bit surprised by the dryness of this book as well. I much prefer Chandler’s stat mech book for content, development, and derivation and would recommend it if you want a good modern intro to subject and Plischke and Bergersen for more advanced treatment. Bottom line: a useful addition to the library of those working in a stat mechy field 🙂
⭐The math in this book can get overwhelming at times, but it’s really just beefed up physical chemistry. But it looks like one of those smart-people books that you see in a professor’s bookshelf, so at least you’ll have that going for you.It can be a bit light in describing derivations at times, and very light with examples, but if you’re looking at this, you should be at that level in edumuhcation, so whip out some paper and figure it out yourself.
⭐I will evaluate only the quality of this Viva Edition. In spite of the transparency of the paper, the typesetting is very good as well as the graphs. The font size seems to be smaller than that of Univ Sci Books, althouth it is fine. Well, if you cannot afford to by the USB edition, this is a is very good alternative for the price/quality. I strongly recommend this book.
⭐This is a good book, but it’s not a graduate text for the first half. If you’re just reading it and not taking the class, buy Hill instead (it’s $10). McQuarrie learned how to teach SM from Hill and it shows. The second half is a whole different story. It’s research level material, but is perhaps out of date. Lastly, Karl Freed and Stuart Rice teach from this book, which should be worth far more than my review.
⭐Very easy to follow and understand! I used to own McQuarrie’s edition for Quantum Mechanics and I have to say this book and the QM books made the subjects easier to follow along and understand the concepts!
⭐You can’t read the print because the print shows through from the other side.
⭐McQuarrie, is a good resource for statistical mechanics, more so for those with a solid mathematical background so that you can fill in the gaps in the derivations and proofs. It is relativily easy to understand and covers the majority to topics well.
⭐Excellent book
⭐Not found.
⭐I really like this book. Though it’s mostly intended for Physical Chemists , the Physics students will also find this extremely useful for a stat-mech course. It can be read alongside F. Reif or R.K Pathria. I used this with Reif’s book .
⭐This book is a classic that graduate students and undergraduate students in their final years, who are interested in molecular simulation and molecular physics and chemistry, must have. In particular, I love the way that there is always a problem set at the end of every chapter such that the students can familiarize themselves more with the topic.
⭐So far (I’m at about Ch 3) it seems to be a good choice. I have a background in physics and math, but developed a dislike for thermodynamics as an undergrad. This book presents the big picture issues regarding statistical mechanics and does a good job tying together quantum mechanics and thermodynamics. Scanning the later chapters that I haven’t read yet, it seems to be a comprehensive treatment.
