Description
The most influential work of architectural criticism and history of the twentieth century, now available in a handsomely designed new edition. Initially produced as the catalog to accompany a controversial and groundbreaking 1932 Museum of Modern Art show of the then new architecture emerging in Europe and America, The International Style quickly became the definitive statement of the principles underlying the work of such giants as Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and other pioneers. It might be said that Henry-Russell Hitchcock and Philip Johnson discovered as well as defined “the International Style,” and over the decades their book has served as both a flashpoint for criticism and a frame for growth in the architectural profession. It has never been out of print in over sixty years. This new edition has been completely redesigned and reset, and it features a new foreword by Philip Johnson, who reflects on the legacy of the International Style and examines the still-precarious power of architecture in our public life.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: From the Back Cover This book is a landmark in American history, and a unique and historical document which should provide general readers, critics, and historians with a time machine through which to view our changing perspective on modern architecture.
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Very dated by now but that’s not why one buys it. It’s the historic document that attempts to classify modernist architecture as a style. There is very little info on each project and, because it is in black and white, some of the descriptions try to describe the colors. It seems to have an exaggerated interest in the lettering on buildings. Very judgmental but give Johnson’s participation, no wonder.
⭐As always, Hitchcock is a captivating and insightful writer of architecture. Very good reading for an American centric perspective on how European modernism was re-packaged and made presentable to American sensibilities (the pragmatist vs. the political). Interesting that Wright is excluded from the ‘group’ yet the Euros of the day acknowledge his influence in development of their ideas. Also really good follow-up articles in the Feb 1982 issue of Progressive Architecture.
⭐This is a book for anyone interested in modern architecture. A must have for any student regardless of professional interest.
⭐I first purchased this seminal book in 1980 for $2.95. I had lost my copy a few years back, and felt I definitely needed it back in my library. Unfortunately this is a cheap reproduction. The grainy photos look like 10th generation Xerox’s! If I didn’t know these timeless buildings, I wouldn’t be able to recognize them! I would gladly pay more $ for clear photos. What a missed opportunity! Shame on you Norton Publishing!
⭐Satisfied
⭐The International Style is critical read because of its style’s importance to architectural history. However, the two authors are extremely biased and overaggressive in their descriptions.
⭐I don’t know if it is the paper back edition or if the original was bad too, not pictures that are referred to on most pages should be better than this. Great info.
⭐A classic book
⭐Used this for a uni essay, it’s alright but would say it’s the kind of book you would only really read for something like an essay, wouldn’t suggest it as light reading.
⭐Ovviamente il giudizio è sulla fattura e non sul contenuto.Stampa delle immagini di pessima qualità.L’ultima pagina riporta la dicitura “Printed in Great Britain by Amazon”.
⭐Not found.
