Description

Lautensach[s “Korea” is a regional geography, the most comprehensive one ever written on Korea in a western language. It was written before the country was divided and provides a waelth of information on the entire country, particularly on the north, something that has been difficult toobtain in the West in the past forty years. Unfortunately, only very few volumes survived the end of World War II, so that it has been very difficultto get hold of the book. Lautensachh[s “Korea” is considered a classical example of regional geography.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is an interesting and all-encompassing introduction to the land of Korea. Initially published in 1942, it is the result of the authors voyages to and exhaustive investigation into the country in the preceding decade. It provides a wealth of background information that is of interest to anyone involved with the country- from climatology, fauna, flora, history, trade and politics. It is a tome however, and being saturated with information, it takes a long time to get through. Depending on your field of interest, you may find parts of it numbing. The writing is not thrilling, although it is subtly balanced between scientific treatise and travelogue, and you are never very far from an interesting anecdote or factoid. Part of its allure is that it describes in detail what is today the DPRK, at a time before partition. It also documents the efforts of the Japanese to develop this part of their former empire. Although the modern nationalist Korean narrative portrays the Japanese occupation as all bad, the reality is that in many cases the Japanese reformed the country for the better, building much needed infrastructure, starting industry and initiating beneficial projects such as reforestation.I find particularly interesting the table of Korean place names, with explanations of prefixes, suffixes and origins; the descriptions of flora and fauna, and the numerous observations of places and practices. Much of the data is still relevant: the rest reveals how rapidly the country has changed.
