Description

Since the end of World War II, Japan has determinately remained outside the current of world events and uninvolved in the processes determining global history and politics. In Japan and the World, distinguished scholars, novelists, and intellectuals articulate how Japan—despite unprecedented economic prowess in securing dominance in the world’s market—is caught in a complex dependency with the United States. Drawing on critical and postmodernist theory, this timely volume situates this dependency in a broader historical context and assesses Japan’s current dealings in international politics, society, and culture.Among the many topics covered are: racism in U.S.-Japanese relations; productivity and workplace discourse; Western cultural hegemony; the constructing of a Japanese cultural history; and the place of the novelist in today’s world. Originally published as a special issue of boundary 2 (Fall 1991), this edition includes four new essays on Japanese industrial revolution; the place of English studies in Japan; how American cultural, historical, and political discourse represented Japan and in turn how America’s version of Japan became Japan’s version of itself; and an “archaeology” of hegemonic relationships between Japan and America and Britain in the first half of the twentieth century.Contributors. Eqbal Ahmad, Perry Anderson, Bruce Cumings, Arif Dirlik, H.D. Harootunian, Kazuo Ishuro, Fredric Jameson, Kojin Karatani, Oe Kenzaburo, Masao Miyoshi, Tetsuo Najita, Leslie Pincus, Naoki Sakai, Miriam Silverberg, Christena Turner, Rob Wilson, Mitsuhiro Yoshimoto

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐It has been almost seventeen years since this volume was gathered and published, and however it might be instructive to every Westerner out there it tells us a story of a country that does not longer exist. Sure, Japan is still out there, and first time since Second world war it has new government, but that is not same Japan as one of the Miyoshi and Harootunian. In past seventeen years my backwater country has changed significantly, and it’s kinda hard to imagine that Japan kept still all that time. Sure, no one could really hope to get to know Japan from a single volume of purely academical work, but one should keep in mind that this book, which has been actual during the time of it’s publishing, can now be read only as a piece of historical document, one upon which we can observe development of a change.Japan in the world concerns itself with a possibility of existence in a new world that was shaping. It has been four years since the fall of Berlin war and end of the Cold War, and new power structure began to emerge. Japan, as a member of losing side in Second World War, needed to place itself into a new world picture which brought a new semantics into existence. Papers in this volume try to present Japan in this view, showing the unresolved problems of past (its relationship with China) and presenting the challenges of the future (as an emerging economic superpower). These papers managed to capture a moment of history and will serve for deepening of one’s understanding of post-Cold War events, yet they will not provide an answer to a question where does Japan stand today.Nevertheless, questions that are posed here need answering, and in development of global economy and information flow, new paths for understanding of Japan seems to emerge. How then does Japan fare in these new developments is an interesting question that should be answered, or (supposing that answers of all kinds already exist) be compiled into a single volume that could be read by anyone that is interested in the matter at hand. This is a book that will provide interesting aspects into the field of East Asian studies but it will do so in historical perspective. Time has come, and I suppose the need exist for next volume on the same topic.
