Description

The Tuttle Compact Vietnamese Dictionary incorporates many new words that have recently entered the language-including the latest IT, internet and technical vocabulary. The layout of the dictionary is extremely user-friendly with headwords in color and two distinct sections (Vietnamese-English and English-Vietnamese) where entries are given in Vietnamese with its romanized form and English meanings. This format gives the learner a head start to mastering the important written characters.

⭐Examples. That’s what I like most about the Tuttle Compact Vietnamese dictionary. Examples make or break a dictionary. Numerous examples make a dictionary great. The best dictionary I’ve ever seen is Le Petit Robert, which is just swimming in examples that do a spectacular job of showing usage. This Tuttle English-Viet dictionary isn’t in the same class, obviously, since it’s shorter and bilingual and far less costly, but it does a surprisingly good job of showing usage. And often you get numerous sub-entries showing how the word is used in combination — an absolute must for Vietnamese. The book is a solid 900 pages, and after almost a year of use, it has yet to fail me. Every word I have searched for has been there, often with an example, and often with sub-entries.I use it almost exclusively to look up the English equivalent of a Viet word, so I can’t really speak to the other direction, i.e., finding the Viet equivalent of an English word. I’ve hardly used it in that direction, but I have no reason to think it would let me down in that respect. My only quibble is the font size. The size is actually fine, except for the diacritics. They can be a bit tough to distinguish, but obviously it’s a trade-off: bigger font means fewer entries or longer book and higher cost. Maybe I just need to get new glasses.I started out with a smaller dictionary when I began learning Vietnamese, but I really shouldn’t have bothered. The Tuttle Compact is everything I need. Five stars.

⭐This is a very helpful Vietnamese dictionary. It has Vietnamese-English words and English-Vietnamese words. I especially like the fact that the words are in bold, blue color. That makes for easy, convenient use and reference. I’ve never had a problem finding a word in it, so it has a very abundant listing of words. In looking up words, one needs to check the proper tonal and grammatical markings. I find in language study that in addition to a text, a good dictionary is very helpful. This one is highly recommended.

⭐A good quality dictionary, this is the only Vietnamese – English dictionary I’ve used without spelling mistakes in the English definitions! The one drawback is that the book is not so well bound – mine fell apart on the road.

⭐Good little dictionary, very helpful for those learning Vietnamese. I can’t attest to the accuracy of the definitions, but it’s worlds better than google translate, which I had been using until I got this. Seeing example sentences and seeing how the meanings of Vietnamese words change when combined with other words really helps in the learning process.

⭐Even though this dictionary claims that it is for both Vietnamese and English learners, it’s much more suited for learners of English. The English entries have IPA listed next to them while the Vietnamese entries do not! So if you are an English speaker wanting to learn Vietnamese, this would not be the best choice for a primary dictionary.

⭐Originally purchased for a friend’s father. He commented that the book uses incorrect Vietnamese, but then again that may be due to different dialects. If and when you purchase this book (for studying and other reasons), make sure the dialect is the same as the dialect you are using/studying.

⭐This is the most complete dictionary of its type that I found. Sometimes words are hard to find becuase of the accents in the Vietnamese section.

⭐- this dictionary cannot translate many types (-ed, -es, -s…) of each word. too inconvenient to read and lookup in kindle.- There is no pronunciation at all. I wonder how foreigners can learn Vietnamese by this dictionary?

⭐It basically makes learning harder instead of easier
