Description

As a mathematician, philosopher, logician, historian, socialist, pacifist and social critic, Bertrand Russell is noted for his “revolt against idealism” in Britain in the early 20th century, as well as his pacifist activism during WWI, a campaign against Adolf Hitler and later the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War. In addition to his political activism, he is considered to be one of the founders of analytic philosophy, receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950 for his various humanitarian and philosophical works. He wrote his “Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy” (1919) in order to elucidate in a less technical way the main ideas of his and N.A. Whitehead’s earlier “Principia Mathematica”. The work focuses on mathematical logic as related to traditional and contemporary philosophy, of which Russell remarks, “logic is the youth of mathematics and mathematics is the manhood of logic.” It is regarded today as a lucid, accessible exploration of the gray area where mathematics and philosophy meet.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book is an old friend. As an undergraduate philosophy student I picked up a copy at my campus bookstore and read it through almost immediately. I had never conceived of someone defining what a number was. I learned about logical treatments of complex numbers and reals in a way that made them intelligible rather than just articles of faith. The book’s system is early Russell but rewards attention to his treatment of relation-numbers and type theory.

⭐Bertrand Russell purified philosophy by removing whims and narrowing it down to pure logic, showing true philosophy is pure logic, the other name for which is mathematics.

⭐It was good. I liked it. I would recommend to myself and anybody who would also like it.

⭐Logic, mathematics and reasoning examined thoroughly. This is a wonderful read that will expand your mind to accept that logic and mathematics not only isn’t confined to vocabulary or definitions of words but rather is based on deductions, inferences and reasoning based on logical axioms. Highly recommend this book and will definitely seek out more Bertrand Russell works because I read this book and was so impressed by it and by the writer.

⭐Don’t buy the Kindle versionThe book deserves 5 stars, its Kindle version zero star. The expression “n-1” (loc. 1588, 1621) appears on my Kindle as 00 n 12 1The letter “omega” (loc.1694) becomes E’. The letter “aleph” (loc.1694) becomes 5. Two to the aleph power (loc. 1714) becomes 25! There are many more errors but these examples are sufficient.

⭐excellent

⭐This is a great book; Bertrand Russell is a master of the English language and is able to express difficult and technical concepts in a way that is easily accessible to everyday reader. HOWEVER, the physical book itself and the publisher made it difficult to read. It seems to have been printed really cheaply, the words are too small, and overall, it’s pretty much unreadable. So, I would look for the book printed by a different publisher…

⭐Classic

⭐I always find it quite exciting to go back to the time when you get to learn from the original thinkers in a certain area. Russell’s explanation of how you can completely strip mathematics to basic principles and axioms to form complex numerical systems and relations is fantastic. It’s well written, easy to understand and makes a somewhat dry topic rather interesting.

⭐Subject of extremly interesting, well written and very clear even for a passionate novice.

⭐Did you read the product description?”This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text.”The first sentence should be enough to change your mind. In case it doesn’t , let me make it clear: It has a typo in every other paragaph.”We scanned this book using a character recognition software that includes an automated spell check. Our softare is 99% accurate if the book is in good condition.”I’m only guessing this book was in extremely bad condition when they scanned it. As if that were not enough, the publisher’s note in the book also mentions that it might have missing images and indexes too. And the page layout and alignment is honestly ridiculous (each page has three columns) and their character recognition software is a disaster; NONE of the mathematical signs are printed properly. Not even the plusses and minuses. The italicized ‘n’ is replaced by “<<" or ">>” for some reason. Zero is written as “o” and 1 becomes “I” or “i” depending on which page you are on. This is pushing the definiton of what can be legallly called a “book”. WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU PUT SUCH A MEDIOCRE PRODUCT FOR SALE? And what is with the cover picture? No, seriously, what is with that?”We would like to maually proof read and fix the typos and indexes, manually scan and add any illustrations, and track down another copy of the book to add any missing text. But our books sell so few copies, you would have to pay up to a thousand dollars for the book as a result.”ORLY? General Books LLC, here’s a piece of advice. Have some integrity. Take your job seriously. I am sure there are a lot of rich people out there who won’t mind paying up for a good book. I won’t be ordering a book published by you for the rest of my life but don’t let that demotivate you.

⭐The book was clearly typeset with LaTeX, thus making its horrendous typesetting even more egregious of an offence. The words are too large and jumps out at you. The layout is both bland and uncomfortable to read. The margins are way too small, and for some inexplicable reason the inner margins are of the same size as the outer margins, resulting in words being scrunched together near the gutter. At least the paper is nice.

⭐This version of the book is full of errors and bad layout. No one has proofread this obviously copy-pasted text. Do not buy this version.
