The first edition of Introduction to Symplectic Topology was published in 1995. The book was the first comprehensive introduction to the subject and became a key text in the area. A significantly revised second edition was published in 1998 introducing new sectionsand updates on the fast-developing area. This new third edition includes updates and new material to bring the book right up-to-date.

⭐Notez Bien: This review is for the 3rd edition (from 2017).I’m just getting into the field of symplectic topology, so any book on the subject with “Introduction to…” in the title seemed like a good place to start. I also know that the authours (McDuff and Salamon) are very prominent and highly respected figures in the field, so I gave this book a try. I’m glad I chose this book as a starting point.As a beginner, I have to say that the greatest value of this book is the care that the authours take in providing set up. The first 190-ish pages comprise a section called “Foundations”, and foundational material is exactly what I wanted. I find a lot of books just skim over the basics, give you a lot of references, and jump right into the advanced material, but not this book. You get everything from the most basic notions to material on open problems in the field.I, personally, am still working through the most basic elements of the first chapter, but I have to say… this is an engaging, well written read. It’s not a boring, dry read. If, like me, you’re just starting to dip your toes into the pool of symplectic topology, I highly recommend this book. As a novice, I have to say that the clarity of the presentation of the material alone makes it the perfect starting point for the novice.

⭐Written by a master proponent, this is still “the book” for graduate student starting out in the symplectic world (after spending considerable amount of time in basic manifold theory). However, this needs to be mastered with someone’s help, someone who has already mastered it. Not suitable for doing on one’s own, especially in graduate school.
