Description
#1 New York Times Bestseller #1 USA Today bestsellerThe ultimate guide on leadership from the bestselling co-author of Extreme Ownership. In the military, a field manual provides instructions in simple, clear, step-by-step language to help soldiers complete their mission. In the civilian sector, books offer information on everything from fixing a leaky faucet to developing an effective workout program to cooking a good steak. But what if you are promoted into a new position leading your former peers? What if you don’t get selected for the leadership position you wanted? How do you overcome imposter syndrome, when you aren’t sure you should be leading? As a leader, how do you judiciously dole out punishment? What about reward? How do you build trust with your both your superiors and your subordinates? How do you deliver truthful criticism up and down the chain of command in a tactful and positive way? These are all questions about leadership—the most complex of all human endeavors. And while there are books out there that provide solid leadership principles, books like Extreme Ownership and The Dichotomy of Leadership, there is no leadership field manual that provides a direct, situational, pragmatic how-to guide that anyone can instantly put to use. Until now. Leadership Strategy and Tactics explains how to take leadership theory, quickly translate that theory into applicable strategy, and then put leadership into action at a tactical level. This book is the solution that leaders at every level need—not just to understand the leadership game, but also how to play the leadership game, and win it.

⭐Over the course of 50+ years of involvement with the military and business, I have rarely read a leadership book so well written as this one. It is among the best of such books, if not the best. With compelling ideas developed from and proven by his own experience as a leader of Navy SEALs, Willink shows how creative applications of honesty, integrity, and the Golden Rule work wonders in demanding environments, particularly the military. His “Laws of Combat” (Cover and Move, Simple, Prioritize, and Decentralized Command; to include Extreme Ownership and Dichotomy of Leadership) are strategic principles that can be applied virtually anywhere. His penetrating insight into complex interpersonal situations leaves one with guidance that is logical, rational, and inspiring. And, perhaps most amazing of all, it is scalable, whether or not one is working with a fire team or an army, or, by extension, a proprietorship or a business empire.I highly recommend this book as a must-have for any serious library on leadership!Of possible interest:
⭐I have been a lifelong learner, practitioner, and developer of others as it relates to the tricky art of leadership. Simply put, this is the best I have read on the topic. Simple, clear, focused, and executable. You won’t find the wisdom in the pages of this book in the bloated books authored by most “leadership experts”. Quite the opposite. The “experts” would challenge many points herein, but for me his approach to leadership matches my own experience almost word for word. The bottom line: Leadership is not about you. It is about the team and the mission. Empower, dignify, and develop people. Accomplish the mission. The rest is fluff and usually pointed at inflating self.Outstanding book. Worth the read – every page. Worth application – every point.
⭐Willink does a phenomenal job stating practical strategies and tactics for leaders at all levels but isn’t afraid to dive into the nuance of multiple applications and situations. He rightly addresses when you can take the tactic too far and to pull back and when a tactic simply won’t work and why. I really appreciated the perspective.
⭐This book provides true value and insights!
⭐I have read all three of Jocko’s books and each one brings a ton of old knowledge back into the light. If you are a leader at any level and you want to know what you should and can do for your team to make them better than read this book. Jocko does not disappoint.
⭐During my 22.5 years of service in the United States Marine Corps, I had ample opportunity to lead Marines both as an enlisted man and as an officer. Through regular leadership training during my military career, I learned the information presented by Jocko Willink in his “Leadership, Strategy and Tactics Field Manual.”Having retired from the Marines 30 years ago, I found this book refreshing. The concepts brought back memories of success and failure that I experienced as both a subordinate and as a leader.I am retired now, but I remember using these strategies after my military service as I rose through the ranks of a National Service Organization, as I grew my personal business organization, and during another career with a state government. When my son was young I remember trying to teach him many of these leadership strategies. I remember telling him that a good leader gives the credit to the team’s success, but takes responsibility when things don’t go well. Successful leaders praise people publicly and reprimand them privately. Successful leaders listen to and train subordinates while encouraging others to resolve problems at the lowest level. These concepts and many others are taught to Marines during their ongoing leadership training.Recently my son discovered Jocko Willink and was excited to introduce me to the author’s bestseller “Extreme Ownership” as well as this field manual. I am proud that my son is using these leadership strategies and tactics in his career and has had an impact on the success of his team’s performance and morale.Throughout my adult life, I have seen people and all levels struggle at work because they have never received training and do not know how to lead others or understand how to build teamwork and morale. Clashing ego’s and lack of understanding of leadership concepts hurt productivity, morale, teamwork, and success in businesses.I recommend this book to family, friends, and others. I think it should be required reading beginning in high school. The leadership skill training provided by Jocko Willink will help people understand and get along with others. Practicing these skills will help people to be better parents, teachers, students, employees, bosses, and more.Enjoy!
⭐Jocko does it again! This book steps through all elements of what it takes to be a leader. Even though there are many military situations from where Jocko derived his examples from, it was easy to connect to my personal experiences in the business world. Definitely a must-read for any level of leader in which they want to better themselves and/or are looking “up and out” on how to lead more effectively.
⭐As advertised, this book is very practical and talks a lot about what to do, how to do it and, critically, why. It isn’t in any way “macho” or what you might expect from an ex army guy. Sure, he uses the army anecdotes to illustrate the points made and, if you like “army stuff” then that can make it more interesting. But, even if you don’t like army stuff, this book will be interesting and useful. There is no fluff, no messing around, no “consultant speak” – there’s just a bunch of fairly simple but very solid ideas about what it takes to be a good leader. Personally I was surprised by the focus on humility, which I think is critical in a leader, but I didn’t expect a Navy SEAL to give that so much emphasis. I was wrong there. Not much of this is new or rocket science, but I think it would be very useful for anyone who is coming into a leadership position for the first time. I think it also does a good job of helping people understand what leadership is, as opposed to “managership”. It’s a shame he doesn’t draw that out but a lot of new managers start off focusing on managing, not on leading, and this book can definitely help them see the difference.
⭐I’m a paediatrician and found this really helpful. I know all about sick children but knew very little about how to handle manage the until I became a consultant- this book really helps organise my thoughts and has made me a better doctor.
⭐Nice well structured. It made leadership like pure art. The code of being a leader, and like Jocko mentioned, it’s not about being a leader for yourself. It’s about the team. There is no I in team. A lot I soaked in and would love to read more books. I strongly recommend it.
⭐I read “Extreme Ownership” when it came out, and really liked the no-BS style. Same approach here, even bettered and refined to adapt even more to other fields.Thank you very much!
⭐Another particular & helpful book by Jocko, I wish I read it when I was younger
