Description
This classic on space travel was first published in 1953, when interplanetary space flight was considered science fiction by most of those who considered it at all. Here the German-born scientist Wernher von Braun detailed what he believed were the problems and possibilities inherent in a projected expedition to Mars. Today von Braun is recognized as the person most responsible for laying the groundwork for public acceptance of America’s space program. When President Bush directed NASA in 1989 to prepare plans for an orbiting space station, lunar research bases, and human exploration of Mars, he was largely echoing what von Braun proposed in The Mars Project.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “The Mars Project is timely. . . . von Braun’s views, seen today against the debate over the role of the shuttle, the development of Space Station Freedom, and the proposal to land Earthlings on Mars early in the next century, raise questions that we still seek to answer.”–Jannelle Warren-Findley, coeditor of A Documentary History of the Space Age About the Author The late Wernher Von Braun came to the United States in 1945, after having been chiefly responsible for the development of Germany’s V-2 rockets. He was director of the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Huntsville, Alabama. He received eight honorary degrees for his contributions to America’s missile and space programs. Thomas O. Paine is a former NASA administrator.
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐To fully understand what Von Braun states in this small book, you need to understand calculus. Not the basic type, but the differential equations level. It is not narrated through a story line, but instead he describes the different parts of the voyage through a series of calculations. If you are one of the few who loves equations, orbits, thrust calculations, this book is for you. Otherwise, you will be dissapointed.
⭐I would probably have bought this anyway, but I read a review that mentioned “the Chesley Bonestell prints alone are worth the price.” Perhaps that person reviewed an earlier printing but this is all black-and-white text and diagrams. Still an interesting historical document. I Also had the impression it was larger than it really is—it is trade paperback size. Not sure where I got that idea. Still four stars.
⭐A highly technical book…it is amazing what they knew back in the ’40’s and ’50’s. They knew how to do it, but then they did not have the capacity to do it. It is interesting in hind sight to see the progress that man has made on this project.
⭐The most we know, the most we can explain the present events WOW!
⭐This book will open your eyes about how difficult is to plan and carry out the trip to Mars, but that it is not impossible nor a sci-fi idea. It is not a novel, and many pages will not say much to most readers, but each chapter shows a small gem and give you the main ideas on how it should be done (with the knowledge and technologies of the 1950s). It explains in less than one hundred pages how to reach one of the biggest milestones for humanity.
⭐Happy to have found this for DH! arrived on time and in great condition
⭐Von Braun was clearly a better engineer than author. This text was written by an engineer, for engineers, LOADED with detailed technical specifications. With that aside, there is a lot of facinating sections spelling out how he (and many at that time 60+ years ago) thought a manned mission to Mars would happen, especially comparing it to Columbus exploring the Americas with 3 ships, etc. Highly recommended for any major Space Nerd..
⭐considering the time it was written and still remain the blueprint for the future, I admire the writers clarity of mind.
⭐All these plans from so long ago, if only the momentum of the 60s was maintained.
⭐Excellent read.
⭐Das Büchlein/(Heft) entspricht dem allgemeinen Standard amerikanischer “Qualität”. Kein deutscher Verlag würde so etwas vertreiben.
