Description
This hilarious and candid collection of personal essays about teaching follows in the footsteps of such classics as Teach Like Your Hair’s on Fire, The Courage to Teach, and Up the Down Staircase. “Send this book to your favorite teacher. They’ll know you’re sucking up. They’ll thank you anyway” (People).Shannon Reed did not want to be a teacher, but now, after twenty years of working with children from preschool to college, there’s nothing she’d rather be. “With an irresistible combination of compassion, humor, and engaged storytelling” (Shelf Awareness), her essays illuminate the highs and lows of a job located at the intersection of youth and wisdom. Bringing you into the trenches of this most important and stressful career, she rolls her eyes at ineffectual administrators, weeps with her students when they experience personal tragedies, complains with her colleagues about their ridiculously short lunchbreaks, and presents the parent-teacher conference from the other side of the tiny table. From dealing with bullies and working with special needs students to explaining the unwritten rules of the teacher’s lounge this “starkly honest, at times irreverent” (Library Journal) look at teaching is full of as much humor and heart as the job it celebrates.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This was quite lightweight, and the author is not as funny as she thinks she is. But there were a few amusing anecdotes, and if you are young and considering entering into teaching, especially El-Hi level, it would be worth your time to read to find out what you are getting yourself into.
⭐There’s nothing more compelling than a good story about a universal life experience, our time spent in school in this case. Unless we chose to become a member of the teaching profession, all we pretty much have is the viewpoint of the student. With that, enter Ms. Shannon Reed, your guide through the world of teaching in preschool, a NYC all-girls Catholic high school, an Brooklyn inner city “theater” high school and finally college as both an adjunct and full time professor of creative writing. Let’s hear it for variety and a willingness to far exceed one’s comfort zone! There are moments that Reed shares of pure joy as well as introspection in matters of race and prejudice, events both funny and tragic and plenty of humorous insights along the way. If you are a teacher, odds are that you’ll enjoy this book. If you were a student at one point (and weren’t we all?), you’ll get an eye opening glimpse into what the variety of human beings assigned to teach you were going through in the course of that assignment. Just like in life, there are teachers spanning the range from awful to phenomenal and you’ll meet many of them while reading this entertaining memoir.
⭐I have bought both the audiobook and the hard copy and will probably get the Kindle version so I can access it anytime and anywhere. In listening so far, I have laughed out loud, cried, and fondly remembered my own K-12 teaching for six years in Columbus, Ohio. I love the way it is organized, chronologically, working her way from pre-school up through college; this was my path as well. I appreciate the heavier chapters being broken up by lighter, hilarious chapters which give me a chance to laugh full-throated and rest my aching heart.Chapter 15 is very timely and should be required reading for all teachers, new and old, in every district. It would go a long way to explain implicit bias and spark difficult conversations. In fact, I am buying at least two more copies for a couple of my son’s teachers. I would recommend this book to teachers, parents of students, and anyone who has been taught. Basically, I would endorse this book for reading by everyone, plain and simple!
⭐She is FUNNY! Heartfelt, sincere and insightful, I read this one in about two days. One bright side of the pandemic is that we have time to read and I’ve read plenty- most have been serious and dark plots. I saw the review in People and decided to take a break from the heavy stuff for a bit and try something funny. If you like Laurie Notaro or David Sedaris this will be right up your alley. Her stories and essays made me “laugh my buns off” as my kids would say. I’m not a teacher but I have children and had tears of laughter when I read about the field trips, sprit days and student essays. So refreshing to have a break and crack up. Plus, she is an engaging author and super perceptive. There are deep and serious parts as well that will hopefully open your eyes to what others face in schools across the country.
⭐As an educator, I fully related to, and felt nearly everything, Shannon Reed wrote in this hilarious, yet deeply felt collection of essays. I teach in a totally different region with a vastly different student/admin. demographic, but have had nearly identical thoughts about many of the day-to-day struggles and triumphs of teaching. I plan to share this with several of my teacher friends and as others have done, would recommend it as a great teacher gift for an instructor of any grade level. Lots of humor, thoughtfulness, and feeling.
⭐As a 30 year veteran educator, I think Shannon Reed’s “Why Did I Get a B” should be required reading for everyone enrolled in a teacher training class. Teachers at any point in their careers will easily identify with her experiences and insights, and those still learning the ropes will find much good advice for dealing with situations they will possibly encounter in the years to come.
⭐Bought this book solely from People Magazine review and recommendation, the author seems like a nice person, so I can’t write what I truly feel about the quality of writing and lack of substance in this book. Hate to waste money like this!
⭐I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have recommended it to every teacher I know! The author hits the nail on the head when she describes her experiences in the classroom, dealing with administrators, etc. Fun, but touching at the same time! Makes me proud of my profession as an educator!
⭐Don’t be put off by the setting, whilst this teacher is writing about her experience from a U.S point of view I’m certain that any teacher can relate to the stories and experiences. This book has great charm and has a range of humour all the way up to laugh out loud!It is however, the moments of pathos and understanding that get you and it can be very moving. This is the perfect gift for any educator, I can imagine once it’s in paperback that parents can give up the endless search for useful and acceptable gifts for their kid’s schoolteacher.
⭐I enjoyed the book because I’m a retired teacher and identified with the main character and the student examples that she gave, from studious students to students from “hell”.
