Description

What makes a narcissist go from self-involved to terrifying? In this national bestseller, Joe Navarro, a leading FBI profiler, unlocks the secrets to the personality disorders that put us all at risk. “I should have known.”“How could we have missed the warning signs?””I always thought there was something off about him.”When we wake up to new tragedies in the news every day—shootings, rampages, acts of domestic terrorism—we often blame ourselves for missing the mania lurking inside unsuspecting individuals. But how could we have known that the charismatic leader had the characteristics of a tyrant? And how can ordinary people identify threats from those who are poised to devastate their lives on a daily basis—the crazy coworkers, out-of-control family members, or relentless neighbors? In Dangerous Personalities, former FBI profiler Joe Navarro has the answers. He shows us how to identify the four most common “dangerous personalities”—the Narcissist, the Predator, the Paranoid, and the Unstable Personality— and how to analyze the potential threat level. Along the way, he provides essential tips and tricks to protect ourselves both immediately and in the long-term, as well as how to heal the trauma of being exposed to the destructive egos in our world.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐There here have been people in my life— neighbors, past and present; family; friends; coworkers; acquaintances who now, looking back, appear to me to have been on the spectrum of these disorders. I had considered them “high maintenance” and I dealt with them accordingly. I’d always knows to limit my contact, avoid or break contact with them; HOWEVER, had I had this book 40 years ago, I would have saved myself SO MUCH time, contemplation, stress and heartache.Mr. Navarro, if you read reviews, THANK YOU for writing this book!! I may be late to the party, but I’m glad I made it!To address the negative reviews I read and to anyone determining whether or not to buy this book who will read those negative reviews, ignore them. One reviewer has zero command of the English language, another reviewer looks like they’re probably on the spectrum of one of the disorders listed within this book; isn’t that ironic?! Order the book and make up your own mind. I’ve already ordered a copy for a friend who wanted to borrow mine when I was done. No way I’m giving mine up!Reading this book may save your life or it may just save you from wasting the next 10-20 years.

⭐The premise of the book is excellent, “Breaking down dangerous personalities into quantifiable bites that could be analyzed then giving you criteria to judge.” The problem was this useful information would have taken 85 pages if the book were written concisely, but it went on and on, like the reader was an idiot and needed the same message pounded into their head over and over again.PROS:1) Valuable tools for analysis2) Guidelines that let you categorize people into one, or more, of his four categories of dangerous people.CONS:1) Stating things that were obvious as if he were revealing great truths. For example, do you really believe that you wouldn’t have known that Ted Bundy could be dangerous unless he told you?2) Stating these obvious truths over and over to get the page count up3) Using known killers and high profile cases to make the point that there are dangerous people out there. He claims many decades as an FBI profiler. It would have been so much more meaningful if he took personal case studies rather than news clippings as his teaching pointsOK information, but way too watered down and making obvious statements as if they were reveling great truths.

⭐This book is not a clinical reference book. It is written to help the lay person spot and identify difficult personalities in their lives. Mr. Navarro explicitly states that throughout the book so any review that complains about terminology or the descriptive checklists needs to examine the goal the author has set forth in the preface and introduction. I found that reading the descriptions of difficult personalities made it easier to put into perspective what one experiences first hand. It is well worth the dime and time to actually read about such difficult people and have helpful advice between the same book covers. It was time well spent.

⭐If so, please read this book.Mr. Navarro IS a “truth wizard” (the basis for the characters in “Lie To Me”).He is a former FBI agent.Stop being gaslighted. Mr. Navarro will not coddle the toxic person in your life. He is writing this book to protect us all by illuminating the warning signs that someone is capable of hurting others without remorse. This book contains the tools needed to recognize patterns of behavior that, quite simply, indicate people who are dangerous. As for politics, it is unwise to risk your emotional and physical wellbeing and not buy this book simply because you like some of Trump’s policies. Please get over it. Quickly.”This person says s/he belongs to the same political party as I do” does NOT mean that person is sane and heathy and good and kind.Kevin Spacey? Democrat. How reckless would I be to insist he is could not possibly be a dangerous person simply because he belongs to my political party? You don’t know Donald Trump personally. Melania does and she stays as far away as she can.Rod Blagojevich is just as bad. Blago is in jail, but Mr. Trump is in The White House with the nuclear codes.Only ONE is a household name, and only ONE is currently a potential danger to anyone.Discussing Blago is meaningless to many, yet he along with disgraced Democratic politicians John Edwards and Jesse Jackson Jr. ARE still called out by name in the chapter focusing on Narcissistic Personality Disorder.”Donald Trump” is one individual. “Donald Trump” is not “The Republican Party” any more than Blago is the Democratic Party. Mr. Navarro is not conflating them. Please don’t let politics get in the way of your safety or your sanity.

⭐It has only recently become apparent to me that I have been a victim of a number of ‘dangerous personalities’ intermittently throughout most of my 40+ years of life! I do not mean a victim in some ‘namby-pamby’ or ‘woe is me, please pity me’ sense of the word. I mean that these personalities have had on-going success in damaging various aspects of my life, from my education to my close relationships with friends, family and partners. In short, they’ve wrought absolute havoc and turmoil in my life since I was a kid because they were my family and therefore the people I was least wary of! I only wish that I had been armed with this book 30 years ago – how much easier, calmer, fulfilled and happier my life would have been! Everyone should have at least a basic understanding of pyschology and of the ‘flawed’ personality types which it is odds-on that many people will encounter. This book helped me to rationalise my own unpleasant experiences at the hands of a number of such destructive and despicable characters – a narcissist, a predator and an ‘EMO’ – and to distinguish the tell-tale signs of potential danger from the normal fluctuations in peoples’ mood and demeanour.Let this book be a stepping stone to further reading on this subject and a more effective ‘radar’ for and defences against these characters.I was happy with the minimal use of clinical/medical terminology within the book and also the avoidance of the question of ‘why’ these people behave the way that they do. For, as Mr. Navarro states, it doesn’t matter ‘why’ when a dangerous personality is wreaking havoc in your life; what matters is that you need to recognise and heed the warning signs from the beginning! Also, whilst examples of destructive behaviour are given, there is no over-the-top gory detail of murder or rape cases.I for one would like to shake Mr. Navarro’s hand and thank him for sharing the benefit of his hard-earned experience in this very useful piece of work. After reading this book, I’m now on constant alert for the signature traits of these loathsome characters so I can give them a very wide berth. If only the narcissists, predators, paranoids and ‘EMO’s’ could be forced by law throughout the World to be branded with a big red ‘D’ for danger on their foreheads, but I can’t see that happening any time soon! So, don’t be a victim. Educate yourself – buy the book.

⭐⭐: 3.5Ex FBI profiler Joe Navarro examines the four “dangerous personality types”: the narcissist, the predator, the unstable and the paranoid. Navarro references real life criminal cases and provides lengthy checklists in order to help the reader to spot those red flags, listen to those alarm bells and avoid or escape harmful connections.A quick, easy read which simplifies the topic and provides a basic introduction and understanding from the point of view of a FBI profiler, rather than a psychologist. Navarro aims to reassure and help victims to prevent them blaming themselves and hopes to protect potential future victims from toxic behaviour.

⭐I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who is trying to make sense of a toxic relationship or wants to feel more secure in their ability to avoid harmful people.Joe Navarro writes clearly and concisely, I finished to book in a couple of days. It’s accessible, too, I got it as an adult who’s experienced a few dangerous personalities up close, and who reads too many psychology books. But I think it would have been just as readable and helpful (if not more so) if I’d had this book as a teenager.Good common sense advice from a thoughtful and perceptive man, with no victim blaming. Although some of the stories he uses to illustrate his points are disturbing and some may find them triggering, I didn’t personally feel this was one of those salacious true-crime books that dwells ununnecessarily on the cruelty. I feel safer and more confident in my intuition having read this, and will keep it on my shelf to refresh my memory in future. Sadly, dangerous people appear in all areas of life and don’t come labelled with flashing neon signs…but the checklists in this book are a helpful aid that might help bring perspective and focus when I try to assess new people in my life.

⭐Very insightful book on the behaviours of people where you get that gut feeling something is very wrong. Observe and listen it says so much to what your mind and body is telling you. I can’t recommend this book highly enough! I am giving this to my daughter next as she has just got out of a toxic dangerous relationship, this book is a must and could save you from much pain and heartache and possibly your life!

⭐This book has so much insight into dangerous personalities, as a mental health nurse I feel this book was interesting and a very good read. It was insightful to call out people on lies and shows great knowledge of the lengths people go to in order to please themselves and justify their own feelings by being cruel to others. It is unfortunate there are people in the world like these. For many kind-hearted people this book should be encouraged to be read as a means of protection and a reminder in life that not everybody has the same heart as you!
