Description

“A lively tour through the impulses that cause many of us to cheat, the book offers especially keen insights into the ways in which we cut corners while still thinking of ourselves as moral people.” — TimeDan Ariely, behavioral economist and New York Times bestselling author of Predictably Irrational and The Upside of Irrationality, returns with a thought-provoking work that challenges our preconceptions about dishonesty and urges us to take an honest look at ourselves.Does the chance of getting caught affect how likely we are to cheat? How do companies pave the way for dishonesty?Does collaboration make us more or less honest?Does religion improve our honesty? Most of us think of ourselves as honest, but, in fact, we all cheat. From Washington to Wall Street, the classroom to the workplace, unethical behavior is everywhere. None of us is immune, whether it’s a white lie to head off trouble or padding our expense reports. In The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty, award-winning author Dan Ariely shows why some things are easier to lie about than others; how getting caught matters less than we think in whether we cheat; and how business practices pave the way for unethical behavior, both intentionally and unintentionally. Ariely explores how unethical behavior works in the personal, professional, and political worlds, and how it affects all of us, even as we think of ourselves as having high moral standards. But all is not lost. Ariely also identifies what keeps us honest, pointing the way for achieving higher ethics in our everyday lives. With compelling personal and academic findings, The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty will change the way we see ourselves, our actions, and others.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Just opening this book for the first time, to read in the Kindle App on Android, this has repeatedly jerked me to random locations multiple times! I started on what seemed to be the Table of Contents, tried to turn to the next page, and was at the Preface; I turned the page back, and found myself somewhere random in the book. I tapped the center of the screen, scanned and found the Table of Contents and tapped that, and returned. Tried to turn the page again, and was taken to page 23! After a few more minutes of trying to read in the paginated view, I decided to leave this review. There is no visible problem with page links, typeset, typography; I have no clue as to what causes the errors. Perhaps the author is running an experiment, using reader metrics to track action and reaction?I’m about to order a hardcopy; THIS experience is annoying.I was going to log in to order a hardcopy of Jim Kwik’s book anyway; I have found reading *that* as an electronic text a near-worthless experience of that tremendously useful book! (I’ve given two hardcopies of that away, it aided one student I tutor to go from struggling with ninth-grade remedial work to succeeding with advanced-placement tenth-grade work in three months.)

⭐Interesting information about how people rationalize. Easy to read.

⭐I discovered Dan Ariely while watching the Elizabeth Holmes Theranos documentary on HBO, all of his points he made about her in the doc were absolutely fascinating so I delved deeper and watched several videos he had done online. I loved how extremely intelligent and great at articulating somewhat complex ideas in a simple matter he is so I decided to look into what books he had written.Since buying this book I have basically become a fanboy/evangelist of his. The concepts he teaches, backed by the numerous studies, proofs, and experiments are absolutely phenomenal. I am a small business owner and the very first chapter on comparison and pricing strategy was immediately applicable to me.If you are a fan of psychology and human interaction or you own your own business, you owe it to yourself to buy this book. It is just so damn good, full of such incredibly well-thought out experiments, examples and immediately-applicable advice that anyone would find value in it.

⭐Is buying this bundle “predictably irrational”? If you read the first book in the series you will find a story about bundling and distractor options when purchasing a magazine. The point is the company persuades the consumer to purchase a bundled option by pitting it next to a less attractive but similar option. Given that this is a main theme of one of the opening chapters, it seems ironic that there would be a bundled option. I am trying to picture the conversation Dan Ariely had with the publisher/marketing consultant over this. However, I still feel like I’ve gotten a bargain so let’s do the math to see if my “predictable irrationality” was a poor decision. The bundled kindle version of Dan Ariely’s 3 books costs $16, a little more pricey than the average book I buy. Buying the three books separately would cost $9.78, $8.99, and $9.99, respectively for a total cost of $28.76. I’ll tell you the truth though, I have not yet read the latter two books (just Predictably Irrational), but I would gladly wager the $6.22 difference between the bundle and the Predictably Irrational price. Dan Ariely’s bundle seems to pass its own litmus test for rationality. Oh, and it’s a great read.

⭐I have to admit that this bundle was pretty much an impulse purchase for me, but due to attending one of Dan Ariely’s online courses I was pretty much sold long before purchasing these books. Since the online course was partially based on the first book, some stories/experiments sounded familiar to me.That being said, I think I learned a lot about human irrationality and the way humans think in general. Thus I’d highly recommend this bundle to everyone who’s at least a little bit interested in psychology and human nature. You won’t be disappointed, even if you’re a complete beginner in the topic: thr book’s literally crammed with stories and interesting/practical experiments to illustrate how each phenomenon occurs in real life. Moreover it’s much easier to read than most of the psychology books out there.

⭐I had purchased Predictably Irrational a number of years ago in physical form. When I decided to purchase the others on Kindle, I figured I would grab the set simply so I could bookmark, search, and reference from all of them.Dan has a great writing style that “de-academicizes” what could certainly be written in a dry, academic style. His relating of the experiments that he and his colleagues do actually make me laugh at times. This makes them far more accessible than they would be without the storytelling. The research is spot on and the insights garnered from it are very useful in many aspects of life… be it as a consumer or a seller, a politician or a voting citizen — anywhere that people communicate ideas to each other. Reading these books will certainly make you more aware of how… well… to sum it up… we’re all pretty irrational.

⭐I was originally introduced to Behavioral Economics and Dan Ariely at University of Southern Denmark, when studying Organization & Leadership. Since then I have enjoyed reading and learning from all Dan Ariely’s books. They are not just interesting, but also very humorous. The books and this bundle makes it easy to understand even if you’re not into either economy or Psychology. The experiments of Dan Ariely’s thorough work says a lot about us as humans, and they certainly challenge one’s thoughts in a variety of situations. If you are open minded and willing to learn about our irrational behavior, then The Irrational Bundle is an absolute must have.I choose 5 stars as I simply cannot give it less. In addition, I believe the bundle will make it as a solid reference for future situations and work. I cannot count all the quick take aways…Irrationally yours

⭐Psychology can appear to be overly dry and academic but this discussion about more recent research not only reveals some interesting surprises, it also presents them in a context that will be useful for managers, marketers and those looking to gain more insight into their everyday relationships.

⭐After a 23 year interest in business ethics, attending events, reading many books, at last a collection of writings, many from very apt experiments which suggests WHY people behave as they do – or misbehave as they do! HIGHLY recommended!

⭐Dan Ariely obviously knows his stuff, and he knows how to share it in an interesting, engaging, and informative way. I’d often thought that academics whose test subjects are university students get to know a lot about university students, but that might not translate into what the non-student body are really thinking and experiencing. Ariely writes with humour and insight; insight that just ‘clicks’ with what you and your peers know to be true, and so I think he encompasses those of us who aren’t university guinea pigs. A very worthwhile read and one I’ll return to more than once.

⭐Books are great. I own all 3 in hard copy form. However, I (purely my error in reading the price) made the mistake of buying the bundle. It’s cheaper to buy each book, in the Kindle Edition separately. Caveat Emptor … and I’m sure I’ll find the predictability in my irrational act 🙁

⭐Thank you Amazon for selling these three books as a bundle. Loved Dan’s work on human behaviour and his real life experiments. A very good book for those starting to explore Behavioural Sciences.
