Aged eighteen with a taste for adventure, Francis Chichester emigrated to New Zealand with ten pounds in his pocket. He tried his hand as a boxer, shepherd, lumberjack and gold prospector, before returning to England.Having qualified as a pilot, in 1929 he embarked on his most famous solo flight in the de Havilland Gipsy Moth from England to Australia. Shortly afterward, he would survive a near-death catastrophe in an attempt to fly solo around the world.Turning to sailing, he won the first single-handed transatlantic yacht race in Gipsy Moth III, despite having been diagnosed with cancer two years previously. In 1967, he became the first person to sail around the world solo from west to east via the great capes.

⭐Fantastic read, hard to put it down. Chichester is a great sailor and writer. England must be proud of him.

⭐One amazing individual living life to the fullest! I went to the same school as Chichester and probably was in the same dorm.Wish I had known him but we were years apart. Chichester was truly a man for all seasons!

⭐This book can be quite boring as it repeats the same scenarios over and over. It would be 5 stars if instead it had concentrated on the highlights of Francis’s adventures. I think the authors realised this towards the end and made for much more exciting and inspiring reading.

⭐A rivetting story of Sir Francis Chichester’s daring and resourcefulness in first flying across stretches of the world in the 1930s then sailing the Atlantic single-handed in the ’60s. His adapted Gypsy Moth flight from New Zealand to Australia via Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands (before those islands had airstrips) was a highlight of the book. Thankfully, the reader already knows he makes it!

⭐such a timeless tale of perseverance during a different time of the world. I thoroughly enjoyed the aviation section and his conversion to sailing. Don’t miss this life experience

⭐A good read. It is almost two stories in one – the first part, covering his adventures by air during the pre-WW2 period, and the second when he turned into sailing after WW2. Personally, I found the former to have been written in a more entertaining manner.

⭐Good adventure, poorly written.

⭐This was a great surprise to me, as like many others I only knew about the author’s sailing exploits. A very well written book, written by a very adventurous, courageous and resourceful man. One of the early solo long distance flyers he covered terrific distances over the sea with no radio and relying on his navigational skill and nerve to reach his objective, which often was some small island. The smallest error would have been certain death. He suffered ill health for many years, but continued his adventures in spite of this. He seemed happiest and healthiest on his own. He found the welcoming crowds, expected speeches, and interviews very stressful which made him extremely ill. A great and inspiring read.

⭐Real adventure stuff that would be impossible with all the communication and electronic gadgetry of today. He must have been made of steel! Flying solo round the world in a biplane and even making new wings himself on the way. Then the solo sailing across the Atlantic with homemade steering gear. A bit difficult to read in a few places unless you understand navigation theory, which I don’t. Gripping reading for me nevertheless about a man’s obsession to overcome whatever nature can possibly throw at him. Shows you what is achievable through sheer determination.

⭐I was given this book in hard back form by my Father in 1970. At the time I was in hospital (destined to a stay of four months) very very badly injured after a road traffic accident. My Dad knew his psychology, the book tells of a lifetime setting personal challenges and overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles, so learning to walk again for me was a doddle compared to all that Sir Francis Chichester had been through! Reading it gave me the encouragement I needed and spured me on to recovery.Additionaly it was a great surprise to learn that Sir Francis was a fearless aviator long before he took to the seas.Terrific read which I shall enjoy second time round on my Kindle.PS. Finished the second reading. It was as good as I remember. The latter part of the book covering the Atlantic crossing sometimes read like they are extractsfrom his log but paint a vivid picture for all that

⭐This man’s life will be hard to replicate in this modern world. His adventures are quite incredable, surley the last man able to achieve pleasure from an almost free world where his his own character and abilities powered him around the world in and on land sea and air. Amazing.

⭐Last read this book forty odd years ago. Thoroughly enjoyed the re read.
