Description

The second edition of this successful textbook provides an up-to-date account of the optical physics of solid state materials. The basic principles of absorption, reflection, luminescence, and light scattering are covered for a wide range of materials, including insulators, semiconductors and metals. The text starts with a review of classical optics, and then moves on to the treatment of optical transition rates by quantum theory. In addition to the traditionaldiscussion of crystalline materials, glasses and molecular solids are also covered. The first edition included a number of subjects that are not normally covered in standard texts, notably semiconductor quantum wells, molecular materials, vibronic solid state lasers, and nonlinear optics. The basic structure of the second edition is unchanged, but all of the chapters have been updated and improved. Futhermore, a number of important new topics have been added, including:· Optical control of spin· Quantum dots· Plasmonics· Negative refraction· Carbon nanostructures (graphene, nanotubes and fullerenes)· NV centres in diamondThe text is aimed at final year undergraduates, masters students and researchers. It is mainly written for physicists, but might also be useful for electrical engineers, materials scientists and physical chemists. The topics are written in a clear tutorial style with worked examples, chapter summaries and exercises. A solutions manual is available on request for instructors.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book is very good! One of the best books I know. It cover an extensive range of materials and optical properties. I really recommend.

⭐I like short and clear explanations and very insightful problems.Gives all concepts that an undergraduate would need for reading more advanced treatment of the topics. It also contains a rather good introduction to nonlinear optical phenomena.Verdict: a must-read.

⭐It is very insightful about fundamentals and basic concepts. At the same time, it is comprehensive and cover most of the related topics. 4-star comes from not detailed discussions in the topics. However, you can find a good Bibliography regarding the relevant chapters Apart from that, it is helpful to comprehend and to digest very basics.

⭐Great book for me (in the nanomaterial field). It filled a lot of vacancies in my understanding of the optical properties of the materials. It also seems to be up to date.

⭐Great book and a great resource as an intro to solid state book. Very clear and includes final solutions in the back. Highly recommended.

⭐I’ve just read the first six chapters but I can firmly say that this book is clear in its explanations, meticulous and well ordered! It takes a very good and deep look at band gaps in materials. I’d recommend it to anyone in optics, electronics or anyone dealing with semiconductor materials.

⭐was what I needed for class

⭐This book is much less formal than traditional texts (Kittel, etc.) and much more focused. Some readers may find this to be a shortcoming, but I feel the book is more accessible than the alternatives.

⭐A truly first class book! Most text books of the age seem all to be about showing how knowledgeable the author is by writing in the most complicated manner possible with acres of equations, not so here. The book takes a methodical step by step, in-depth look into the optical properties and behavior of matter. Its content is easy to follow, logical, and with illustrations and equations when and where needed, which are all well explained. The book is so well presented that it is quite readable as a stand alone text. Hats off to the author!

⭐Very well packaged, good communication from seller. Would fully recommend

⭐This has the fundementals required for working with materials processing. I have found it useful whilst studying at university, the information is at the right level to get the basics right and much more. It is well laid out.

⭐It really looks like the new one. The price is rational as well. Totally, it’s an item with Good quality and satisfaction.
