Description

Authored by an insider with over 40 years of high energy materials (HEMs) experience in academia, industry and defense organizations, this handbook and ready reference covers all important HEMs from the 1950s to the present with their respective properties and intended purposes. Written at an attainable level for professionals, engineers and technicians alike, the book provides a comprehensive view of the current status and suggests further directions for research and development. An introductory chapter on the chemical and thermodynamic basics allows the reader to become acquainted with the fundamental features of explosives, before moving on to the important safety aspects in processing, handling, transportation and storage of high energy materials. With its collation of results and formulation strategies hitherto scattered in the literature, this should be on the shelf of every HEM researcher and developer.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Comparing with other publications with the same purpose to create a compendium related to the so-called energetic materials, this book succeeds on its goal. Nevertheless it has a focus over the application in large calibers munitions (e.g. artillery) and special devices (e.g. counter-measures), the text has also useful information, like properties of explosive, regarding the substances applied in small arms cartridges, for example. Starting with the basics of energetic materials, it also covers the procedures while handling and transport such kind of substances and articles.

⭐I have owned this text for over two years, and I am ashamed to say I paid around $200 for this material. There are much better options. The author is clearly knowledge in the field of energetics, but his backround seems to be more focused on the organic chemistry and synthesis. This text is very dry and the author seems to brush over important points. This book in actuality is more akin to a summary, in which topics and energetic materials are summarized. It seems that much of time can be spent reading this text without actually gaining any useful knowledge if you are already familiar in the field. The best example I can give is it’s like reading several index cards, it’s a shotgun blast of facts with little discussion. This text cannot decide wether it wants to be a reference book or a text book.I would suggest Chemistry if High Energy Materials instead. The following book will provide much better foundations and explanations along with the theory of why, in addition Thomas the author is at the cutting edge, much more of a mover and shaker in the field then Argrawal. https://www.amazon.com/Chemistry-High-Energy-Materials-Gruyter-Textbook/dp/3110536315/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1551043377&sr=8-1&keywords=Chemistry+of+high+energy+materials
