Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I wish I could give it negative stars. My entire class is struggling to pass the course due to the complexity of its explanations for no reason. That added to a teacher who doesn’t know how to explain. The concepts are split among different chapters, super confusing. Do not buy or drop the class if this is the required textbook.
⭐I’m writing this review because I see a lot of negative reviews of it on amazon. Really, its actually among some of the better math texts I have encountered. It assumes you have had some prior exposure to the subjects discussed, which I will admit are some of the most maligned in mathematics. I actually enjoyed the book, I think so many people miss out on the author’s sense of humor.Math is a participatory sport. There are rules to be followed, if you understand them its fun, if you don’t, spend some time with your instructor asking questions until you do. You are paying for the class, get your money’s worth. There is a good review of the necessary concepts to complete each section, it helps to refresh your memory. Each section is short and goes by quickly, but some of the questions really delve your knowledge of the principals involved. I even went to see my instructor regularly 🙂
⭐Fabulously well-written book. I felt like the author was my friend and it made learning to write proofs absolutely painless. I couldn’t recommend this book enough. It’s seriously one of the best textbooks I’ve ever read, if not The Best.
⭐This book is awful. Examples are unclear and hard to follow. I struggled a bit in my course due to this, especially through the most complex topics, including induction and loop invariants.
⭐Needed for classes
⭐I had a very strong mathematical background coming into college, and it’s a good thing I did. This book managed to take concepts I understood very well coming into my discrete math class and make them confusing. The examples are not well explained and the text itself is very unintuitive. I just ended up skipping the reading and doing the problems. If you have any sort of discrete math experience, don’t bother with this book. If you don’t, try to find something better.
⭐I just want to make a note that there is writing in the textbook from a prior owner/renter. So just be careful not to get charged for writing in the book or anything.
⭐good book for college courses covering Discrete Mathematics.
⭐I haven’t looked at maths since I was around 17 in school, I am now 25 entering postgraduate studies in computer science. I have worked as a programmer for some years. I do not rate myself as a strong mathematician, and I have found this book easy to follow, and rewarding. It does not presuppose any more than a basic mathematical grounding, starting with fairly basic reminders such as “recall that an integer is even if it is twice some integer” and quickly progressing on to more advanced topics, which are all explained one step at a time, introducing new concepts and reinforcing previously introduced ones.Contrary to other reviews, there *are* in fact answers in the back to every other question. Each section ends with several questions. These can be hard but they allow you to make sure you fully grasp the content before moving on.It’s not a book to dip into. It’s more like an intensive course in book-form. In fact it does seem rather that authors simply combined their lecture notes and wrote them up into book form – eg page 22: “That’s probably enough for today. Give these ideas a try and let me know how it goes. And speak up in class if you see that we need to go over something”. But that doesn’t detract (in fact it makes the author appear more human!) and adds to the atmosphere of it being a taught course not a reference book.I would recommend it.
⭐the book hard not soft – strong 100% happy. good illustrations – technicolor 80.9%. printing and paper – made +100% happy.
⭐This book is good for preparation of discrete mathematics it strongly focus on basic concepts. There are ample amount of questions one can solve in this book. Language of this book is easy to understand. This book is sufficient for those who has discrete maths as an subject in engineering and other field. Regarding Gate exam this book will cover 70%-80℅ of syllabus.
⭐Great book for computer sciene students. Through concepts and precise.
