Description

This text introduces students to basic techniques of writing proofs and acquaints them with some fundamental ideas. The authors assume that students using this text have already taken courses in which they developed the skill of using results and arguments that others have conceived. This text picks up where the others left off — it develops the students’ ability to think mathematically and to distinguish mathematical thinking from wishful thinking.

⭐This is the text for a foundations course that is required at the college near me for math majors or others going into upper division math courses. This semester (Spring 2012) I’m a senior citizen auditor of this course, having retired from a career in applied mathematics. Half-way through the course, having examined much of the material in this clear and well-illustrated text, I can say that I wish there had been a course based on a book like this decades ago, when I first got into higher math. This excellent text covers much of the abstract material that underpins higher math courses, which introduce said material only as needed. Having to understand the abstract foundational material at the same time as trying to learn the main points of the advanced math course can be overwhelming to some students. So if you are a student thinking of getting into courses such as advanced calculus or analysis or topology or abstract algebra, and your school doesn’t offer a course in foundations of higher math, I recommend studying this book first.

⭐This isn’t saying much, but this book is probably my favorite math textbook and second-favorite textbook of all time. It does a good job of of explaining itself and providing challenging problems, but it also gives good advice on how to write clean, accurate proofs. I wouldn’t read it unless you were taking a class that required it, but I’m happy this is the textbook that I have to read.Don’t buy it new, though. Why in the world are these people selling this book for $360 when you can get it for fifty bucks used?!

⭐In this book, some analysis tricks are easy. Some are enormously difficult. I wish authors who write the textbooks of advanced mathematics could take the trouble to show us how easy the easy tricks are.

⭐I hate book prices but love the books

⭐This book is very readable. It is very easy to find the theorems I’m looking for.Examples are very helpful, and appropriate for learning the material.Explanations in the text are clear and easy to follow.

⭐vino en muy buen estado

⭐Shipped quick and condition as stated. Would buy again. Thank you!

⭐Crap i still cant believe they teach this crap. I wish i could give it a zero
