Description

This book, based on lectures given at the Accademia dei Lincei, is an accessible and leisurely account of systems that display a chaotic time evolution. This behaviour, though deterministic, has features more characteristic of stochastic systems. The analysis here is based on a statistical technique known as time series analysis and so avoids complex mathematics, yet provides a good understanding of the fundamentals. Professor Ruelle is one of the world’s authorities on chaos and dynamical systems and his account here will be welcomed by scientists in physics, engineering, biology, chemistry and economics who encounter nonlinear systems in their research.

⭐thanks

⭐A delightful little read – a little and highly mathematical overview of chaos – from a master.

⭐I must admit to being a little put off. By the fact that the two previous reviews of this marvellous little book are brief to the leastI was deterred to by the danger of writing too simply or writing too technically and perhaps putting off potential readers in the process but the subject matter is so thrilling and exciting I knew I had to have a go.To be honest the book is not for the general reader. It is the result of a series of lectures by an expert in the field aimed at graduate students, faculty and others working in the field. I will not attempt to translate it into general usage English but rather attempt to give readers a flavour of the contents.I stumbled upon the notion of chaos and antichaos by accident when I watched a science programme on television which asked the question of why sand forms a pyramidic structure when poured out of a vessel. I thought about it at all sorts of times, looked at egg timers and other things but then put it to one side as my studies took me elsewhere.Friedrich Hayek in a seminal article made me think once again about the subject and I supplemented my investigations by reading more introductory materials and.then tried to incorporate insights into my economics.I have become increasingly frustrated with economics after the debacle of 2008. Not because of the failure of the economic establishment to predict the occurrence which I view as akin to reading runes, but the failure to develop new and different tools to understand the complexities and interactions of economic factories. The sand example made me wonder again about the so-called Kondratiev wave or cycle. If a.anything this was a major impetus for other explanations of economic “cyclical” behaviours.Economic systems are not static they are dynamic.in order to a chief specific outcomes, the rules of the system are established in whatever system is used, market or socialist or whatever term you wish and the operation of any system is monitored such that any negative result can be corrected. But, as Isaac Newton observed, to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. What results causes imperfection in the original system which alters the dynamic and can produce different results from those the creators designed the system for.The statistical recording of the complex patterns which are created by dynamic systems which more often than not inclusive of many “molecules” if you like can be analysed with a number of sophisticated techniques which are providing new insights I to such real behaviour. This book is a good place to start on a journey Into the world as it is not as we would like to be in the economist’s model but it does assume a certain familiarity with the techniques.
