Description

Six of today’s leading pastor-theologians-John Piper, Voddie Baucham, D. A. Carson, Tim Keller, Mark Driscoll, and David Wells-have joined together to offer Christians a practical, biblical vision of Christ’s supremacy, so they will be better prepared to present the undeniable truth to a searching society. After grounding readers in the important truths of Christ’s deity and the gospel, The Supremacy of Christ in a Postmodern World strives to help believers understand how to share these truths in a postmodern society. As readers begin to apply the lessons from this book, they will gain a practical, biblical vision of ministry for the twenty-first century.

⭐The whole collection of essays could easily be summarized in Voddie Baucham’s statement on page 62: “Christ is ‘before all things.’ Why did you choose your last job? Was it because of the supremacy of Christ in truth as it relates to your purpose for existing? Or was it because it paid you more than the job you had before? Pastor, how did you choose your current church? Was it because of a pursuit of the supremacy of Christ in truth in all things, even as it relates to your pastoral purpose? Or was it because this position is a little more prestigious than your last one? All things were made through him and for him. That means my life, my family, my ministry–everything that makes up who I am–must be characterized by a commitment to the preeminence of Christ.”Definitely Baucham’s essay was my favorite, but there were excellent viewpoints, from Piper’s 10-step process of doctrinally based joy to former Emergent pastor Mark Driscoll’s thought-provoking look at “Gospel Theologizing and Contextualizing.” This book has a number of quality nuggets to make the reader think, and I think the journey necessitates my highest rating.

⭐This book is a breath of fresh air among the morass of postmodern writings that the academic world calls scholarship. I stumbled upon this gem 4 years into my doctoral studies at a liberal progressive university, where I have been exclusively reading Marxist and atheistic driven philosophy. I had found myself confounded as how to approach post-modern discussion from a Christian perspective and the writings of all the contributors have been incredibly inspiring and more than helpful. I recommend this book to all Christian scholars, especially those toiling in a secular environment. I also recommend the book to anyone who just needs answers and advice on how to respond the culture in which we find ourselves. Thanks for reading.

⭐I led a study on this book for the last semester with some graduate students and undergraduates. The book is not overly complicated; everyone was able to engage with it in our group at church, so the readability was fine. The chapters by Piper, Keller and Wells were particularly stimulating as we are trying to reach our peers with the Gospel, so covering “culture”, “joy and love” and “theologizing” was important to us.We had the most discussion and criticism of Baucham Jr’s treatment of postmoderns and Driscoll’s contentions.I would recommend this book to read with a group as it stimulates discussion quite well.

⭐This book is amazing. The collaboration of the top theologian-pastors that wrote for this book is stellar. It is very helpful learning how very different people, form all over the U.S. have come to the same conclusion about the current state of U.S. culture. Each author offers useful perspective and strategy for reaching people here, particularly in urban settings, with the gospel. Read it and become more prepared to share the truth with people in your everyday life.

⭐This collection of essays, articles, and transcripts is a balanced look at post-modernism and the impact of PM on the church.I expected a bit more direct assessment of emerging/emergent, but overall I appreciated the book’s tone and presentation.

⭐Scholarly, but not beyond honoring the Christ intended above self-honoring the authors!I LOVEd reading this book and made MANY notes for future references.

⭐This book is a recommended resource for Bible college students and its information and teaching are valuable for any Christian wanting to deepen their understanding on the subject.

⭐great book
