Description
In 2005, a disgruntled archivist at the Vatican Library made contact with revisionist historians Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy, claiming that the Vatican was secretly housing a number of unpublished ‘heretical’ Gnostic Christian texts. He presented Freke and Gandy with a facsimile copy of an ancient manuscript, which is presented to the public for the first time in this book. This gospel will shock academics and Christians alike. It makes the extraordinary claim that the long-awaited ‘Second Coming of Christ’ has already happened; and it also explores the intimate relationship between Mary Magdalene and Jesus, his ‘Beloved Disciple’.And, perhaps most controversial of all, it reveals Jesus as a Gnostic master with a zany sense of humour and an upbeat message. As Jesus says himself in the text: ‘Death is coming. Life is foreplay.’
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐”The Gospel of the Second Coming” is a breath of fresh air among the stench of dogmatism in today’s church. In order to get the full ironic impact of this fourth installment to the Freke and Candy series, the books: “The Jesus mystery”; “Jesus and the Goddess”; “The Laughing Jesus” are strongly recommended prerequisites. Especially to the reader who is less than knowledgeable about the history of the Christian and Islamic faiths. This is the true story of the way the Christian church could have been, had it not been for the followers of the Gnostic philosophy being, utterly, wiped off the face of the earth by the most brutal, totalitarian regime ever to come down the Pike… The Holy Church of Rome.”The Gospel of the Second Coming” takes all the ideas presented in the previous books and presents them as a dialog among Jesus, Mary Magdalen, and Peter with cameos by St. Paul and the Bishop Irenaeus (look it up).In my opinion, Freke and Candy prove the old adage” “History is Written by the Victors.”I recommend this book to all those whose sense of humor has not found it’s way into the dungeons of dogmatism.EDinWAState
⭐Because I love just about anything that dispels the lies of religion, particularly christianity, I’m in love with Tim Freke and Peter Gandy’s works. This book is just as hilarious as “The Laughing Jesus” in its simplicity of using logic and facts to wake up the world to the truth of what is. At times, what’s written may feel like a club. Based on recent events involving “religious freedom”, I believe that it’s imperative to use a club, axe or another lethal weapon to end the insanity. If you’ve a strong stomach for the truth and for getting the religious lies you’ve been told challenge in a humorous way, then this book is for you. It’s also a great gift for the religious fanatics in your life.
⭐At times silly, this piece does an excellent job of two things 1) Illustrating the philosophical and metaphorical underpinnings of the Jesus myth, give us a glimpse at its original meaning and 2) Inspiring the reader to consider a neo-gnostic, 21st-century form of Christianity that has the power to help us manifest the best possible future for generations to come.
⭐Timothy Freke offers his fourth book (along with the help of Peter Gandy) in his series of highly contraversial books diving into the depths of supressed Christianity. Were as in the last three books the duo focuses on the possible origins and history of Gnostic Christianity in “The Second Coming”,they instead write a Gnostic gospel themselves. The book focuses on Jesus,Mary Magdalene, and the disciple Peter. The dialogue comes across halarious at times, but it also harbors some very powerful moments that nearly took my breath away when i focused on the depth of the questions and answers Jesus gives. This book is both a comedy and a series look into the history of not only the church, but of human exsistance. My only complaint is that I wish the book was a bit longer, and maybe wider in scope.I would suggest reading: The Jesus Mysteries,Jesus and the lost Goddess, and the Laughing Jesus, before picking this up. However, you can open up this book and still get the big idea it conveys. The other three books just make it an easier ride. The bottom line is a book like “The Gospel of the Second Coming” is long overdue.Jesus gets a rightful upgrade by Freke.
⭐Irritatingly pubescent.I’ll stick to the previous books by this author.
⭐This is an amazing and humorous synopsis of much of content of Tim Freke’s and Peter Gandy’s earlier three books on Gnosticism (which I highly recommend, but not a necessary prerequisite to enjoy this book.) The Gospel is set as a dialogue among Jesus, Mary Magdalene and (Saint) Peter. The book gives an interesting take on Christianity, it’s history (and the plethora of misconceptions prevalent today) and what Christianity SHOULD really be. The last chapters in particular are a hilarious parody of fundamentalist Christian thought on the rapture and day of judgement. Those chapters alone are well worth the price of the book, but the reader should avoid skipping to the back because the “Jesus story” (the bulk of the Gospel) contains immense wisdom and plenty of chuckles to boot. Freke and Gandy managed to effectively and humorusly needle many of their critics (including the Amazon reviewer of their “The Laughing Jesus” who criticized them for using too many exclamation points!!!!!)It’s a great read. It’s lots of fun but at the same time contains so much wisdom that is spot on essential for humanity to hear and understand in order to grow out of our collective dilemma of materiality and grow into the sprituality that is our true nature. It’s time to wake up from the dream, and Freke and Gandy have helped us by providing a delightfully concocted primer that everyone can understand.
⭐I’ve read all of Freke’s books and they’re all excellent, particularly the Jesus Mysteries and the Laughing Jesus. While the Gnostic philosophy can be quite “deep” in those books, he makes it fun, fast and easy to understand in this simple satire of traditional Biblical gospel text. I highly recommend this book to those who already understand Gnosticism, but want a refresher course that doesn’t take itself so seriously. Even just as straight out entertainment, it’s worth the read. Strangely, my copy is bright florescent orange with black velvet raised lettering. Weird. I would have made the book looks faux leather with gold embossed lettering to give it that “Bible” look. Still, it’s definitely worth it for the humor.
⭐Although classed as a “novel” this is not only a very funny-but-serious effort too, to get across an understanding of the mystery of Creativity to us all…and how we can take charge of our own existences. Maybe the first couple of chapters have to be carefully re-read in order to familiarise the reader with the “slant” of the message, but, after that …it’s mind and heart opening stuff (with a smile!) all the way!For someone like me – who has trouble understanding the “deep and meaningful” stuff – this work is an invaluable gift from the authors (or “the Author!”)for which I will be forever grateful.
⭐I found this book very amusing and hilarious. It was very easy to relate to the characters in this book because of the way they are portrayed in such a modern manner and modern vocabulary.I found the subject matter quite easily understandable and I could relate to it and believe the outcome of the story.
⭐I bought my copy second (or preowned) as we have to say these days. The previous owner only got to the end of chapter three according to the page tape. I only made to the end of chapter two. I read a page further into the book and it was just as much bloody rubbish as in the first two chapters. My son is moving home soon and is having a clear out so he has a skip in his back garden, so I found a great home for this crap.
⭐Very pleased
⭐Not seriously amusing – more amusingly serious. I don’t imagine it will change the world but it certainly gets the points over to the sceptical reader. Still not sure what Gnosis is but perhaps I’m making things over-complicated.
