Rabbinic texts are often cited in New Testament and Old Testament studies, but hitherto there has been no easy way for a student to grasp the scope and variety of the relevant rabbinic writings. This book introduces the student to the full range of the early rabbinic writings, with a thorough introduction and notes, so that both a bird’s eye view of the literature as well as close aquaintance with typical and important texts can be obtained. This will enable the reader to embark on further study with a clearer orientation. The book also aims to correct many mistaken views about rabbinic Judaism arising from outdated conceptions of the relation between Christianity and Judaism.

⭐This is not a particularly long book. Maccoby has selected the most interesting texts from the fairly extensive corpus of Rabbinical literature to include in this volume. The book is also valuable for the overview he gives of Rabbinical literature, which takes up the first quarter of the volume (pages 1 to 48).I bought this book because I was interested in the Megillat Ta’anit and the Seder Olam Rabbah in particular. Both are fairly short texts so I was disappointed that Maccoby didn’t include more of them! The other extracts from the Mishnah, Tosephta, Midrashim, Talmuds, Liturgy, Targums and Haggadah are good but I really disliked the way Maccoby structured his notes. Why he didn’t use footnotes is beyond me.
