⭐I had never heard of Bonhoeffer until this book came out. It took me a while to get around the Kindle version I picked up on a special price and read the book. But when I saw Mr. Metaxas recently on Cspan I was reminded I hadn’t read this biography yet. I have read some of his other books and enjoyed them and this is no different after reading it through quite rapidly.Of course Bonhoeffer is a sad story though inspiring because he died for his beliefs. But the book provides a great and very readable account of his life and story. Yes, Bonhoeffer is a religious story and a religious man that offered witness to the terrible regime that enveloped Germany from 1933 – 1945 (I dare not mention it because the reviews gets flagged) and he ultimately died because of his principled opposition. But this is such a well-written and worthwhile book anyone should and can read this and unless that have no soul, they can’t help but be interested and inspired. Wow. Terrific. Highly recommended.
⭐I loved this book, it was a comprehensive, provoking, and heart challenging look at a man who gave everything to love the “unlovables” in the name of Christ. He stood up and called out the church for their in action against Hitler and for allowing him such a strong foothold. I am giving this book 1 star however because it seems Erik Metaxas has completely forgotten what Bonhoeffer lived and died for in that he is now writing propagandist garbage about immigrants aimed at children. I can’t ever imagine Bonhoeffer condoning any of that nor can I fathom the Jesus that I and Metaxes know endorsing this hatred in any way. I am profoundly disaapointed in Metaxas as he seems to have embraced the pure hatred of the Trump era in light of the love of knowing and following Jesus.
⭐I had heard about Bonhoeffer all of my adult life, but never took the time to dig into his faith, his ministry and his role in WWII. This was a fascinating read. I learned so much about what the churches were experiencing during the rise of the Third Reich. Hard otherwise to understand how they could have sat on the sidelines while Hitler instituted eugenics/ethnic cleansing. The book was like taking a class on ethics. So many dilemmas on a day-to-day basis. But his faith in God was an inspiration. So sad that he did not survive the war. I have a friend who is a Bonhoeffer aficionado. He said that this book is pooh-poohed a bit by the real Bonhoeffer scholars. Maybe so, but for someone who is just dipping a toe in the water, it was wonderful. I found myself wanting to share my learning and insights with friends and family.
⭐When I was done this book I honestly felt like I was leaving Bonhoeffer himself and all his companions. Heartwrenching, insightful, Metaxas takes the disparate material of confessions, letters, historical movements, personal circumstances, personal interviews and weaves together connections that tell the tale of a man who knew his call of God, and turned his back on the offer of an easy life to sacrifice his days for the sheep of Gods pasture to whom he was sent. Difficult, and lengthy a read as it msy be, it is far more equally rewarding to have finished. This is not a book, its an experience. Highest recommendation I can give.
⭐A lackluster attempt to improve on Eberhard Bethge. One must wonder how Metaxas justifies Dietrich’s fight against Hitler and Fascism, and was ultimately hanged for it. We now see this author praising a President whose example mirrors those that Dietrich opposed and fought against. It makes one wonder if the book doesn’t warrant a disclaimer. There’s some serious disassociation going on here.
⭐I love this book! Anyone wanting to learn about Bonhoeffer and German church history, as well as WWII, will love this book! As a WWII history buff , and a Christian with some German heritage, I learned some things about Germany and the German church before and during WWII that I didn’t learn in secular history books. This book highlights the fact that the way that WWII came about was due to the failings of the Christian German church. To be a Christian in name only or mostly is not the same as having a relationship with Christ. The German church was passive and allowed the love of their country to mix with their Christian faith, or override it, and so Hitler took advantage of it and thus we had WWII. I really believe now that if the German church had had a real revival and real relationship with Christ, and stood up for what the Bible , what Jesus, taught then Hitler would never have had a chance to bring about what he did. Any country’s failings are due to the failings of the church. This book would be great for any apologetics thinker/reader as well as WW1 and WWII history buffs. EDIT 5/2020 – I wanted to also add that as a follower of the Christian faith to learn what I did in this book broke my heart when it came to learning about the German church failings. I did not write this review to bash Christians or German Christians. Thank you. EDIT 12/2020 And for those thinking that I’m saying that Christians alone are responsible for WW2 that is NOT what I’m saying. They were a PART of the problem. There were many non Christians who were passive or put all their eggs in a Nazi basket and allowed Hitler to do what he did.
⭐Again, Eric Metaxas wrote about a historical figure many of us have heard or read about. His coverage is well researched, non biased, and presents Bonhoeffer’s thoughts, writings, and conversations, many through letter excerpts, which he wrote to friends and family. It follows his actions from birth to his untimely death and gives you clear insights into his ideas and beliefs. You feel like you know Bonhoeffer, and are acquainted with his family and friends. I was sorry when the book ended.
⭐I had already read this book from the library and wanted to purchase it for my own library. This book was very well written and a much better, more thorough biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer than I had read previously. The historical facts, the authors knowledge of the times and the issues is evident and makes the reader truly understand the man he is portraying. It is of even more importance because we are living in an age that is mirroring the evil of that day.
⭐Excellent and poignant book that is gripping at a time of great evil facing Mankind . In fact Mankind and Christianity what ever the denomination owe a great debt to Bonhoeffer and those who stood by him with in Germany at a very lonely time , while The Allied Forces , Soviets , Commonwealth fought to get to Hitler . Thank You Eric Metaxas for a book that gave me a better understanding of the evils of the Third Reich and that evil only prevails if good men remain silent , through his eyes . The book reinforces my own visits / study and silent prayers to the death camps we have visited . I am confident that Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer was an inspiration to Martin Luther King jr, Ghandi , Mandela as to the many tributes given by the many famous who have read the book in todays era .
⭐Bonhoeffer: “If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor in the other direction.” He got off the train; surely to be considered one of the greatest men to have lived in the last century, not that he would have aspired to such an accolade. I have passed the book around my friends. It has been so well used, that I have now purchased a hardback copy. His story is inspirational, and brought to life by Metaxas’ lively style. This book should be high on the list for anyone interested in knowing what it must really have been like to live in 1930’s Germany.
⭐This was an absolute masterpiece. Gripping and intriguing from start to finish. This book has impacted me immensely and challenged me deep to the core. His life and message will live with me and shape me for many years to come. Thank you for bringing his life and teaching to our attention.
⭐What a fantastic read. I couldn’t put it down and needed to know more. Bonhoeffer was a man who stood his ground because of his love for his Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. His faith was phenomenal. Everyone who knew him and met with him would be so blessed. He faced so much danger and sadly, was eventually caught and put in prison. Even through his prison experience he portrayed Christ. This book you must read and learn.
⭐Eric Metaxas gives you fly-on-the-wall access to one of the most remarkable Theologians of the 20th century. Although a daunting 600-odd pages, you’ll never want to put it down. A helpful biography of a man who served an even more remarkable God than he, I’ve heard of many scholarly criticisms but Metaxas didn’t intend to write academic drivel. He wanted the general public to hear the story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and he has done that extremely well.
