The evidence is consistent over more than a millennium: there had been a female deity in Israel, the Mother figure in the Royal cult, who had been abandoned about 600BCE. She was almost written out of the Hebrew text, almost excluded from the canon. This first of two volumes traces the history of the Lady in the Temple, and looks forward to the second volume in which Barker will show how the Lady of the Temple is reclaimed in the advent of Christianity, and becomes the Lady in the Church. The result is breathtaking, and like all Barker’s work, is impossible to put down.

⭐The Mother of the Lord is a truly awesome work of scholarship with over 300 references in each chapter and an impressive synthesis of ancient scripture and translation. Margaret Barker tells the story of how the Goddess was lost and removed from ancient Israel temple traditions and builds on her previous work in Temple Theology. I agree with another commenter that starting with Temple Theology before moving on to The Mother of the Lord is a good idea. Otherwise, its like jumping into the deep end not knowing how to swim. Don’t miss the last chapter where Barker offers insight into the story of Genesis and the symbols of the Garden of Eden.I am still looking for more information into the menorah in the temple. As I read I hoped that she would go into more detail later into the book but I was disappointed that was not included.As always Barker does not discuss the implications of her research on various traditions today. She unapologetically presents her findings in as clear and linear a fashion as she can with extensive references to back up her assertions. She leaves the discussion of implications to adherents to various traditions. Her work is so groundbreaking that it deserves the consideration of believers across denominations and the areas she opens up for investigation promise to have a broad impact.

⭐I am not a biblical scholar, but found this topic so fascinating that I was able to follow the train of reason much better than I expected. I find Margaret Barker remarkably insightful and dedicated to the meticulous and tedious work involved in revealing what has been so long hidden, and very nearly lost. I am anxious for the next installment!

⭐Interesting insights and reasoning. Some was hard to follow or seemed a stretch, but overall, good stuff. What is volume 2 called?

⭐I love Margaret Barker and her keen insight and study, I’m just not in board with the DH or source critics she pushes on the reader. Her best book in my opinion is “the Great Angel” very insightful.

⭐Insightful: Great perspective on a controversial subject. As always the unexpected is to be expected with new information being brought to bear upon the subject.
