Description
• “Science can’t explain the complexity and order of life; God must have designed it to be this way.”• “God’s existence is proven by scripture.”• “There’s no evidence that God doesn’t exist.”• “God has helped me so much. How could none of it be true?”• “Atheism has killed more people than religion, so it must be wrong!”How many times have you heard arguments like these for why God exists? Why There Is No God provides simple, easy-to-understand counterpoints to the most popular arguments made for the existence of God. Each chapter presents a concise explanation of the argument, followed by a response illustrating the problems and fallacies inherent in it. Whether you’re an atheist, a believer or undecided, this book offers a solid foundation for building your own inquiry about the concept of God.

⭐Simple, straightforward book with arguments I’ve already heard dozens of times. Good starting point for folks ” on the fence”. I browsed the 1 star reviews for this book and couldn’t hold my laughter. Some of the low-balling reviewers and commenters seem to think that if you don’t believe in Christianity, you’re being rebellious. Hilarious. When I was a child, my parents introduced me to Christianity and the usual ” Sunday school ” nonsense while also providing me with all the science and nature books I wanted. Religion wasn’t forced on me and I was free to come to my own conclusions. There was nothing to rebel against. Even at an early age, I found Christianity to be fundamentally unsound and just plain silly. Noah’s ark, the flood myth, talking snakes and donkeys, Jonah and the whale, and a dead guy that rises from the dead and ascends into the heavens. C’mon, most any kid that’s allowed to come to his/her own conclusions is likely to see it for what it truely is : absurd. The Jesus character in the Judeo-Christian bible had some good things to say, but hey, so have many other men & women throughout history. I gave my children the same options I had. Thankfully, they chose reason. Gosh, I don’t know how we manage to do it, but we’re thoughtful, moral people who do good without a god, go figure. I could go on and on, but I’ll keep it simple. I’d rather have unanswered questions, than answers that can’t be questioned. No need to ask who created the god of Christianity, I already know : bronze-age men who needed a simple way to explain everything they didn’t understand. God did it ’nuff said. I’m content to simply wonder about things. My life is full of meaning and purpose without any god(s). I’m alright with being an insignificant dot in a big ole universe. The book says just about everything else I have in mind. Read it. Think about it. Pass it on.
⭐When I saw this book, I was very excited. I thought ’20 reasons! Wow! That is a lot of science butting up against a lot of theology! a regular slug-fest! Faith vs. Science! This will be good!’Sad to say, this book is not that. At all. There is practically no scientific proof in this book at all, in fact. Almost all of the ‘reasons’ given as to why there is not a god are not, in fact, reasons. They are sort of peripheral issues to the real ‘core’ of that topic. For example, it’s pretty easy (indeed, self-explanatory) to debunk the assertion that ‘there must be a god because his existence is proven by scripture’…or the assertion that ‘there must be a god because belief in god is so widespread’…or the assertion that ‘there must be a god because he answers prayers’…or the assertion that ‘so many people have died for God; therefore, he must be real’.Really? Is that all you got? This book does indeed ‘debunk’ (if you could call it that) a bunch of no-brainer comments similar to the above – basically, some of the lame reasons why people do not want to give up religion. They don’t want to give up religion because it provides a framework for their lives and allows them to remain intellectually lazy by attributing to ‘god’ any phenomena that they do not understand. But that is a whole different topic. In the end, none of the discussion in this book puts even a small dent in addressing the core issue that is promised in the title.: ‘Why There Is No God’. The book answered questions…just not the one promised.
⭐An excellent introduction and summary of modern secular thought. This reads like a good starting book for someone who finds themselves suddenly without belief, faith, and/or religion. I wish I had found it years ago when I had my life changing life change. Instead I had to learn everything this book covers (and covers well) over the course of a year or so before finally finding a philosophy/religion all my own (Satanism).I highly recommend this for religious people who want to understand their non-believing friends and family members too. These are very common reasons people don’t believe (the reasons covered in this book). This book is also well sourced, creating a treasure trove of further reading. Finally, there is a very touching photo at the end. Thank you for putting that in there (and thank you for writing this as a former Muslim, we need MORE of you writing stuff like this but I know it can be very dangerous for you).
⭐I was born and raised in Iran. My parents were Christian, but not a seriously practicing variety. My grandmother was a practicing Russian orthodox who would take me to church.Later,I was enrolled in the American Presbyterian mission school in Tehran. Community School, it was called. It had a good curriculum, interspersed with morning prayers and hymn singing; bible class where we were immersed in the subject along the lines of the school. The school, however, was also a melting pot of many children of other faiths, nationalities, races, and origins. In my young mind this ambiance created more questions than answers. What is it that, if there is a God (one God) of one faith or another, that holds a moral high ground above all others? What makes this deity better, kinder, truer, etc. than the others?I questioned the preaching and sermons, and was not very popular with our bible study teacher. As I grew up and had the opportunity to travel extensively, I met many people of all faiths, nationalities, races, cultural back grounds, and social strata. There I saw faithful believers of one faith or another; different races who spoke different languages, non believers, etc.Irrespective of faith, nationality, race,or creed, I saw people who were good, bad, honest, or not so honest. This had nothing to do with their respective faiths, and everything to do with their individual personality and character. This, and many more unanswered questions, led me to identify as atheist.I looked for proof which was never forthcoming, and was preached dogmas instead that I found mythical at best, to totally ludicrous..This, in a nutshell, has been my path to atheism. At the ripe age of 77, and in the end run of life, I can say that I have had a good and fulfilled life that I did not waste on worries about some fictional afterlife. We humans, I think, are an integral part of the world food chain which gets “recycled” just like all plants and animals after death. This is why I appreciate and this book and many others; and why I follow Atheist Republic with interest and pleasure.
⭐The reviews complaining that this book hasn’t presented any new ideas/information miss the point. This is THE most concise overview of atheist ideas you can get. It’s not meant for digging deep, leave that up to Dawkins, Hitchens et al.For the average Joe, not looking to get into academic theses about theology, this is the best book to start off with. It’s short. You can read it quickly. The language is far more accessible and easier to follow than others. Even easier to read than Sam Harris. The author references famous and more academic texts throughout, at the end of each chapter. So if you want more in-depth reading on a point he raises, you will be able to follow it up.It’s the best book to leave lying around your house if you’re hoping to accidentally-on-purpose introduce other people to atheism. Someone could pick it up, open any page, read a couple of lines and instantly have their worldview challenged, whereas with other writers they’d need to absorb a page or a long chapter for the same result. It’s probably the best starting point because it covers absolutely every conceivable argument so clearly and so concisely. Then it points you in the direction of further reading to back itself up.It’s less self-indulgent than other atheist books, the author does not seem to relish in tearing religion apart, he is very objective in his approach.I loved it. I think it’s the best starting point for someone looking to build a library of atheist texts. Also if you find yourself debating with an everyday theist, this is THE book to have on hand. Thanks to the way it’s laid out, you can dip into it and instantly find the part you need to counter any theist argument. It will help you to communicate your ideas really clearly and effectively.
⭐This is a useful book for theists and atheists alike. It sets out clearly the arguments against the existence of God, which arguments theists need to understand if they wish to debate intelligently with atheists. Equally atheists, who certainly don’t always argue their case calmly and factually, should find the book helps them present points much more effectively. The author approaches the topic without any vehemence or aggression which in itself is a lesson for those of us who too often lose patience with opponents of atheism.I recommend this book to anyone who joins in debates, on either side, about the existence of God.
⭐Excellent book. And intelligently and articulately argued and explained. I’d like to make several points:If there is a God, then why doesn’t he – or why has he never – made himself known to us, and do so in such a way that no-one on the planet could be in any doubt that he exists. Wouldn’t the very fact that he did so transform the world and our reality. Of course it would, so why has he never done so. That said, why didn’t he do so in the first place, then there would never have been anything to transform. The best way I can make my second point is like this: If *I* were God, there is no way I could ever stand back and do nothing to prevent wars, for example, or the Holocaust(s), or famines, or millions of children dying every year from malnutrition and Vitamin A deficiency etc, etc, etc. Or slavery, or dire poverty etc. And yet what is the history of Man….. war, war, war and MORE war. Why?! What is the point! Does it serve any purpose? Is there some point in letting all that pain and suffering and devastation just go on and on and on, century after century after century! And I really can’t get my head round why God would have life evolve over hundreds of millions of years before intelligent life started to evolve (and is now very much in the process of destroying the very planet that sustains him and her), and poison and pollute and rape and plunder our collective Home. Or create a reality in which every minute of every day, billions of creatures are killed and eaten (or eaten alive) by billions of other creatures (including Man, who is also destroying the habitats of our fellow creatures on a massive scale), hundreds of millions of them within seconds or minutes or hours or weeks of being born into the world, It really doesn’t make sense to me.And it’s absurd beyond words that this God has a Heaven waiting for believers, and a Hell waiting for those that don’t believe, when if he just showed himself in some way or other, then every one on the planet would know he exists and, as such, believe. OR – when unbelievers die – have them come to Heaven and then chuckle (God, that is), and say: ‘Look, you were wrong!”, and then welcome them. But then why wouldn’t you just create heaven on earth in the first place. I know *I* would if I were God!
⭐Does nobody bother proof reading any more? This book is littered with errors of grammar, spelling and spacing. As for the content – why do people persist in blaming God? In saying that just because had things happen there can be no God? It is simplistic in the extreme. The fault lies with man.The message has been misinterpreted over centuries and is still happening. I read this book out of interest. It is simplistic in the extreme. Why should people need arguments for the existence of God? It is a matter of faith. What I would say is that people have different degrees of faith and different views on the God they believe in. Does that matter? No it doesn’t.If you are going to write a book meant to persuade people to your point of view you would have to do better than this.
