Description
Meridon knows she does not belong in the dirty, vagabond life of a gypsy bareback rider. The half-remembered vision of another life burns in her heart, even as her beloved sister, Dandy, risks everything for their future. Alone, Meridon follows the urgings of her dream, riding in the moonlight past the rusted gates, up the winding drive to a house—clutching the golden clasp of the necklace that was her birthright—home at last to Wideacre. The lost heir of one of England’s great estates would take her place as its mistress…
Meridon is a rich, impassioned tapestry of a young woman’s journey from dreams to glittering drawing rooms and elaborate deceits, from a simple hope to a deep and fulfilling love. Set in the savage contrasts of Georgian England—a time alive with treachery, grandeur, and intrigue—Meridon is Philippa Gregory’s masterwork.

⭐ Compelling reading, another can’t-put-it-down series of books! I did not give it 5 stars only because there are a couple of places in the plot where I said to myself, “Come on – really??” It was early in the author’s career, so I think it was just that her skills were not yet as refined as they were eventually to become. But I wanted the series to continue! I’d have read more about these characters, to be sure. And where else can you find a story that tells you about life in a circus and how to catch a trout without a fishing rod?
⭐ SPOILERS HERE!!!! I loved the Wideacre triology….at least the first two books. Despite the perversions and depravaties of the first two books, I was enthralled and I couldn’t wait to round out the trilogy with Meridon. But, Meridon disappointed. I read one review that said that the biggest mistake was that most of the book didn’t take place at Wideacre. I didn’t think that would bother me – after all, we’d heard about Wideacre for enarly 1200 pages at this point. But, it’s true. This book feels completely different without Wideacre. And though you understand why Meridon is not there, you never quite get the feeling that you’re continuing the story. Even when Meridon finds her way to Wideacre, it’s magic is lost of me – and I can think of is how stupid a character she is.Due to her rough life, Meridon is not a warm creature. She is not kind or have the same love of the land. She only wants it to want something that’s hers. When she engages herself to Perry against James’ wishes, I knew I wasn’t going to be pleased with the end result. Anyone could’ve seen that she was going to be taken. And though you see a real spark between herself and Will, it never really comes to a true passionate head, as it should (and I don’t mean sex!) – given that Meridon has never known passion – physical or emotional. When she and Will finally get together, it just, sort of happens. There’s no real buildup. Then, once she has given away the land to Will and the corporation, you can’t believe it’s just all that easy over and done with.I advise that if you are a fan of Wideacre and The Favored Child, do read Meridon and round out the trilogy. But, don’t be expecting the amazing fire and passion that came with the first two. THe magic of Wideacre certainly wasn’t in this book.
⭐ I’ve completed the trilogy and this is far and away the best of the three. The first two are quite dark tales with little redemption. The third brings the story home in a very satisfying conclusion. The series is a grim reminder of how far women have come and the work still to do.
⭐ Thank you, Philippa Gregory for writing this wonderful piece after the nightmare of the first two books! As much as I suffered the first two, this one I have fully enjoyed!I would say that any horse addict would be trilled to read Meridon.I bought the novel as the first book after I purchased my Kindle Paperwhite. This gave me the opportunity to read a few chapters before buying it and I could make up my mind. I am glad I bought it and I would recommended it for anyone who had the nerve to end the first two books, the second of which is particularly appalling. So, if you are devoted to Gregory, the story is nice. When I think about it, you don’t need to have read the first two books in order to enjoy this one.
⭐ [ASIN:0743249291 Wideacre : A Novel; ASIN:0743249305 The Favored Child : A Novel; ASIN:0743249313 Meridon]Philippa Gregory is one of my favorite authors, yet one of my least favorite authors. She writes brilliantly when writing of major historical characters like King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth, Mary, Queen of Scots, Anne Boleyn, Mary Boleyn, as well as the people involved in the War of the Roses. However, when she writes period fiction and/or romances without the historical framework of these real people, her writing descends to abyssmal tales of sorcery, incest and manipulation. True, some of these same themes appear in her better historical works — but only as sub-plot subject material. However, these heavily-used themes, with little else by way of story line, make reading the Wideacre series a chore, rather than a pleasure. Thank you, Ms. Gregory, for your brilliant historical research and writing. But please, don’t waste your talent on trash like this.
⭐ This is the third and final book in the Wideacre series and after a disappointing effort in the second book, I was cautious in purchasing this one. I only bought and read it because it’s a Philippa Gregory.Look, it wasn’t her finest work, but it was definitely better than the second book. The story was vastly different from what I was expecting and there were parts that were brilliant. Overall, though, it was rather average. I won’t give away the ending, only to say that I saw it coming and that was disappointing.
⭐ Meridon is book 3 of the trilogy beginning with Wideacre. The second book of the trilogy is The Favored Child. I’m glad that I began with reading Wideacre. I couldn’t put the book down so I was anxious to read the second and third book in the trilogy. I think it’s important to read Wideacre first – it really set the stage for the other two books – it really helped me understand the original heroine’s lust for the land called Wideacre. I don’t believe I would have enjoyed the second and third books nearly as much without knowing the history of Wideacre and the personalities of the characters. Phillipa Gregory is a wonderful writer. She writes with such detail you get lost in her books. I also felt that it was a wonderful learning experience about the way people lived and loved in that period of time in Georgian England. Great Story.
⭐ I read the Wideacre Trilogy but felt like the books (each individual book) just drug on and on. Most of the characters were distinctly hard to care anything about really. I loved having the strong female character but the loss of morals and ethics makes the individual ugly, strength at the cost of others is perhaps the worst trait an person could have in my opinion. Though some of the characters were redeemable in the end, it seemed too little too late. By the end of the series I was exhausted with the whole thing and glad it was over. If you want to read Philippa Gregory, read her historical fiction. History is where her heart is and that is abundantly clear in her writing.
⭐ I have read all three books in a row. They are deep, sometimes twisted, full of drama, intrigue, and you never know what to expect. All of them are about a woman’s search for power, her place in the world, and what she will do to get it. Also they are a statement of how the world then and now needs to learn that money doesn’t equal happiness or goodness. The only fair, good, and honest way to live is to work together. No class separations, no gender separations, no money or power separations. We are all the same. I love what this trilogy has to say about it all in its own fun, exciting way. Read them and enjoy.
⭐ I ordered this book when I first started reading Wideacre, that I initially liked and I ultimately hated. I did not like the protagonist of this book at all. I am sorry I ordered the rest of the trilogy. Unless you like, sadistic, self centered, incestuous, inherently evil people you will hate this book, nothing gave me more pleasure than to see this initial bitch die.I have no intentions of reading Meridon or the favored child. You know they have their mothers genes, mores the pity.
