Description

Therearemanyexcellenttextsonelementarydi?erentialequationsdesignedfor the standard sophomore course. However, in spite of the fact that most courses are one semester in length, the texts have evolved into calculus-like pres- tations that include a large collection of methods and applications, packaged with student manuals, and Web-based notes, projects, and supplements. All of this comes in several hundred pages of text with busy formats. Most students do not have the time or desire to read voluminous texts and explore internet supplements. The format of this di?erential equations book is di?erent; it is a one-semester, brief treatment of the basic ideas, models, and solution methods. Itslimitedcoverageplacesitsomewherebetweenanoutlineandadetailedte- book. I have tried to write concisely, to the point, and in plain language. Many worked examples and exercises are included. A student who works through this primer will have the tools to go to the next level in applying di?erential eq- tions to problems in engineering, science, and applied mathematics. It can give some instructors, who want more concise coverage, an alternative to existing texts.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Yeah, it’s an ok book, but it’s got a lot of typos and doesn’t follow the curriculum of many Dif Equ classes. The first chapter is packed with tons of real applications and whatnot to distract you from actually getting to solve some Dif Equ’s. By the time you get to chapter 4 it’s pretty basic though, still doesn’t cover everything in other classes (and covers some stuff not in other classes.

⭐I do feel sorry for the low review rating of this book, which is due to its bad-production kindle edition, not a rating about the content of the book. For my experience, I had to select the suitable book to teach a 1-semester class, and I surveyed the other 5 textbooks : Simmons, Boyce & Diprima, Blanchard et al., Braun’s and Dover’s Bear’s books. I found that Logan’s book has some preferable features to use as the main text :1) The book is concise and readable which is suitable for a time-constraint reader. Standard textbooks such asBoyce & Diprima, Simmons, and Blanchard et al. perhaps are too much for a first-time encounter, and, in my experience, can bring the reader to get lost in the forest.2) Less focus on calculation, but intuition and applications. Unlike many textbooks which emphasize various tricks to solve first and second order equations, Logan’s book seems to emphasize more on concepts, intuitions and how can the equations are applied in the real-world problems. (Various tricks are on exercises instead). This again helps the reader to grasp the big picture of the subject, and not concentrate too much on tricky calculation parts (which are not very much have applications or presently superseded by numerical methods). This compact book, unlike Dover’s Bear’s little book, contains considerable number of applications in various fields (also in excercises) such as Physics, Engineering, Economics, Ecology, etc. This is desirable since Differential Equations was indeed invented for applications, unlike other pure math subjects.3) It is really elementary, suitable for the first encounter. Textbooks such as Braun’s is more advanced and can be used in the more advanced courses.Textbooks such as that of Simmons can be used as a very good supplementary to introduce to more advanced topics.

⭐I made the mistake of buying the Kindle version. The type is very poor. There is very little contrast and the letters do not scale well. The letters and mathematical symbols have faint and nonexistent segments. The pictures are very small and, again, with minuscule an faint legends.

⭐This book (and my professor) made this class so horrible that I had to drop it prior to my deadline to do so. That was back in 2009 or 2010 (i can’t remember which). If this book would have better explained to me why I was learning the things I was learning I believe I would have done better. A lot of that had to do with the professor, who was actually fired after the completion of this class. Good luck on anyone who actually needs this book. I have it still and still blows me away at how bad things are explained.

⭐I selected this text to teach a one-semester Diff Eq course to advanced high school students (most have finished BC Calc), and picked it because it seemed to be more accessible than some of the more traditional texts. It is very good for what it says it is – a first course in differential equations. It does not have as much theoretical explanation / proofs as other texts, but it does a good job setting guideposts for a study of differential equations. Includes a great deal of applications for those who are interested.

⭐My test is tomorrow and I bought the kindle version a while ago. So I just now realized that this version does not have all of the information, especially exercises that are in the physical version. I had to re-buy an online version with google books. If it wasn’t for that online version, I would be completely screwed. If you want to buy an online version, go check out google books.

⭐This Kindle version is listed under the third edition. However, this is NOT the third edition!!!!!!!!

⭐I was going to buy the second edition, in fact I was on the second editions page. It gives you three options on how to get that book, hardcover, softcover and kindle. When you click kindle version it switches to the first without informing you that it has made that switch. I accidentally purchased this book that has no relevance to my class and wasted money. It is ludicrous that the first version is on the same page as the second version, they are two separate books with some major differences. I would like a refund please.Try it yourself:
