User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I knew “what this book is about” but wanted a larger print version than what I now have in my library. While this is not “large print” for the visually impaired it is larger than in a paperback version. Aside from the fact that is was written by a great man of Western history, the larger print is a major plus.

⭐This added to my collection and I am very pleased with my purchase. Concise well written history book which is informative and easy to read. The book fitted the sellers description exactly.

⭐I thoroughly enjoyed volume II of Churchill’s History of the English Speaking Peoples. My volume is from the Dorset Press, 1956. This book covers the period from the late 15th century to the late 17th century (Charles II). While I don’t always agree with Churchill’s specific interpretation of events, his overview of this period is excellent. He especially adds value when he writes about people or events that I know very little (such as Charles II), but of the chapters are quite interesting. Churchill’s writing style is excellent, making it a joy to pick up the volume to read a little each day. I’m looking forward to reading volumes three and four.

⭐Winston Churchill’s “A History of the English-Speaking Peoples” is a masterful and detailed work. Volume 2 is especially good, since it covers the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in England, which was a time of conflict and upheaval. From the last days of Henry VII through the reign of Henry VIII (and his wives), the short reigns of Edward and “Bloody Mary,” the Elizabethan age, the accession to the throne of James I (James VI of Scotland), Charles I and the English civil war, the beheading of Charles and the beginning of the interregnum, and, finally, the restoration under Charles II and the reign of James II, Churchill provides a detailed and insightful account. One of the best reasons to read this volume if you’re looking for a history of this period in England is because Churchill is a great storyteller. Although factual throughout, it reads more like a well-written novel.

⭐Like most histories covering an extended period of time, there are limits to the details that can be included. I have always found this particuluar history to be a convenient reference. The complete set is in four volumes and should be purchased as a set. Volume I, “The Birth of Britain.” covers the period from the Roman invasion to the end of the Saxon period and the beginning of the Normans, ending with King Richard III and the War of the Roses. Volume 2, “The New World,” covers the period from late Medieval period (starting with about the Tudor kings) up to arrival of William of Orange. Volume 3, “The Age of Revolution,” picks up the tale from William of Orange up through the creation of the British Empire, and ends with the Napoleonic era and the Congress of Vienna. Volume 4, “The Great Democracies,” covers more recent history. All volumes are well indexed and contain useful maps, genealogy tables. I have always found it to be a useful reference, both for checking back on some family history, and for keeping things straight when reading historical novels.
