Description

Acknowledged as one of the greatest achievements of modern scholarship, Arnold Toynbee’s A Study of History is a ten-volume analysis of the rise and fall of human civilizations. Contained in two volumes, D.C. Somervell’s abridgement of this magnificent enterprise preserves the method, atmosphere, texture, and, in many instances, the very words of the original. First published in 1947 and 1957, these two volumes are themselves a great historical achievement. Volume 2, which abridges Volumes VII-X of Toynbee’s study, includes sections on Universal States, Universal Churches, Heroic Ages, Contacts Between Civilizations in Space, Contacts Between Civilizations in Time, Law and Freedom in HIstory, The Prospects of the Western Civilization, and the Conclusion.Of Somervell’s work, Toynbee wrote, “The reader now has at his command a uniform abridgement of the whole book, made by a clear mind that has not only mastered the contents but has entered into the writer’s outlook and purpose.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Everything arrived on time and as advertised

⭐Toynbee pioneered the discipline of long cycles in history and politics, which was followed-up by other scholars like Modelski, who wrote Long Cycles in World Politics. It provides significant insight and structure to understanding the haze of historic events which ordinary books on history just documents without any meaningful interpretation.

⭐excellent

⭐Yes, Toynbee’s point of view is a bit archaic. Yes, there are more detailed, more comprehensive studies of history done since his work. And, yes, even the abridgment is heavy reading. But the overview of civilizational development and decline done by Toynbee is unmatched anywhere. The second volume of the abridgment, written 60 years ago and describing civilizations going back thousands of years, is full of glaringly obvious parallels and invaluable insights into what is happening in the world today. Get both volumes of this superb work.

⭐Arrived earlier than I expected! It’s in a very good condition.

⭐late 20th C verbiage and educated gramar-structure can be a challenge to the 21 C folks….this fellow is a bit long winded too…seems to me anyway – but it will be done…mf

⭐Written my like a lecture and a fact based book.

⭐excellent survey of history.

⭐If you like history then this book is an answer to your needs

⭐Perfect follow up to the first edition, for the full picture read both.

⭐World famous classics.
