Description
In early 2000, Adnan Syed was convicted and sentenced to life plus thirty years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, a high school senior in Baltimore, Maryland. Syed has maintained his innocence, and Rabia Chaudry, a family friend, has always believed him. By 2013, after almost all appeals had been exhausted, Rabia contacted Sarah Koenig, a producer at This American Life, in hopes of finding a journalist who could shed light on Adnan’s story. In 2014, Koenig’s investigation turned into Serial, a Peabody Award-winning podcast with more than 500 million international listeners
But Serial did not tell the whole story. In this compelling narrative, Rabia Chaudry presents new key evidence that she maintains dismantles the State’s case: a potential new suspect, forensics indicating Hae was killed and kept somewhere for almost half a day, and documentation withheld by the State that destroys the cell phone evidence — among many other points — and she shows how fans of Serial joined a crowd-sourced investigation into a case riddled with errors and strange twists. Adnan’s Story also shares Adnan’s life in prison, and weaves in his personal reflections, including never-before-seen letters. Chaudry, who is committed to exonerating Adnan, makes it clear that justice is yet to be achieved in this much examined case.
User’s Reviews
Review “If you’re looking to revisit the story of Adnan Syed that enthralled millions of listeners for the first season of “Serial,” look no further than this book from Rabia Chaudry, a friend of the Syed family who first brought the case to “Serial” host Sarah Koenig’s attention.” ―RedEye”True crime enthusiasts and anyone willing to delve into the unsettling world of guilt versus innocence will find Adnan’s Story an enjoyable, but heart-wrenching ride. Chaudry has an impressive command of style–using the perfect balance of compassion and investigation to open Syed’s case to the world.” ―The Lineup”Rabia put her heart and soul [into this]. This isSerial come to life. If you liked the podcast, you will love this book.” ―Daisy Khan, WISE“Chaudry’s book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how media ― particularly social media ― came to play such a powerful role in this case . . . Chaudry’s passion clearly drives Adnan’s Story: The Search for Truth and Justice After ‘Serial.’ But it’s the mix of media skills and legal education that makes her book such an illuminating firsthand report from the front lines of social media change.” ―Baltimore Sun “Chaudry’s clear, vivid and highly readable account of the case will bring the story to life for readers unfamiliar with the podcast, and even the most devoted ‘Serial’ fans will find fresh insight and a vast amount of new material. Chaudry’s legal training serves her well as she marshals her defense, but so too does the Pakistani heritage and Muslim faith she shares with Syed.” ―Washington Post“Crisp, powerful prose…Chaudry’s description of the PCR hearing in Adnan’s Story is utterly riveting―high stakes, a breakneck pace, brilliant expert witnesses.” ―Entertainment Weekly”Any Serial’ fan should eat up this heavily researched book.” ―New York Post”Rabia Chaudry is a woman on a mission . . . It was easy to forget, listening to ‘Serial,’ that it was a true story about real people. Adnan’s Story adds context and humanizes it in a way that could change how you think about the case, and about ‘Serial’ itself.” ―Los Angeles Times“Adnan’s Story should satisfy those who can’t get enough of this perplexing case.”―Newsday”You’ll find yourself tearing through the book as quickly as you binged on episodes of the podcasts.” ―Bustle”Lays out new details that [Chaudry] believes exonerate Syed…[they] already have produced results.” ―People”As stories of wrongful convictions go, Adnan’s Story is hands down a certain winner.” ―New York Journal of Books”Chaudry is uniquely qualified to tell this story.” ―Elle.com”A skillfully written account of injustice that will have wide appeal to fans of Serial and readers of human interest stories, and is especially timely as Syed’s conviction was vacated in July 2016 and a new trial granted.” ―Library Journal”Readers new to the story will have no trouble following―the narrative is outlined extensively from the beginning―and podcast listeners will find plenty of previously undisclosed material…She strongly makes the case for cultural and religious bias in the investigation and conviction and presents damaging evidence of police misconduct, including tampering with evidence and a witness. She also examines other suspects and their possible motives and alibis.” ―Publisher’s Weekly, starred review”A page-turner…[Chaudry’s] writing is clear, eloquent, and engaging, and her case is convincing.” ―Kirkus, Starred review”Chaudry includes a great deal of important information that was never dealt with in either podcast, Serial or Undisclosed…The rich information provided elegantly by Chaudry helps the reader construct the world in which Adnan Syed, his family and friends live.” ―TAPinto

⭐ I really enjoyed the book. Prior to reading the book, I had only heard the Serial podcast. My only complaint is that I read it on my Kindle. The author, Rabia Chaudry, inserted copies of notes, hearing transcripts, etc. I could not read them on the kindle because the print was too small. It would not enlarge.I pretty much figured out what the contents were, but it would have been nice to be able to read it (or have a transcript written below).
⭐ I love this book, as I’m obsessed with the Serial and Undisclosed podcasts and Adnan’s case.I already own the Audible version, purchased back when it was released in 2016. Today I purchased the Kindle version so that I could read the new afterword that’s touted on the new 2019 book cover that’s shown on the Kindle page for the book.Unfortunately, it’s deceptive, because it seems the new afterword is not included in the Kindle version, despite it being trumpeted right on the book cover within the downloaded Kindle version of the book that I’m holding in my hands. Disappointing! And false advertising.Hope they fix this by adding the afterword to the Kindle version and the Audible audiobook.
⭐ Really a 3.5. Had some trouble getting past the silliness of interspersing some lady’s dream I with all the factual evidence. And how Rabia manages to seem so certain at some points in the book and rides the fence in others. At times her use of non-evidence grows tired when she clearly thinks some things carry more weight than they do. Still a decent read with some insight above what most have heard in the Serial podcast.
⭐ Sadness and sympathy to Adnan for suffering through what our legal system can do to people. Once there is proof it screwed up it takes another dozen or so legal maneuvers to get the person released. What happens for all the years wasted missing out on a real life. I admire Adnan for his strength, faith, and ability to stick to what he believes is best to get through this terrible ordeal. Thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. Hopefully the legal system will release him and he will get a chance to see the outside world once again.
⭐ I love the way Rabia explains things I thought I knew a lot about. This book is a MUST READ for Serial entusiasts. #FreeAdnan
⭐ Very good story. However, I felt he author repeated information to often. Compelling story but with a sad ending. .Our system (police, lawyers, judges, etc) is just broken. It makes difficult to understand how people can lie and have no remorse. How our system is so broken and no one cares. It is time to change our system. How can you send someone to prison , knowing they are innocent. They just robbed him of growing up and enjoying normal adolescent stuff.. They robbed him from being with family and friends. He had such a brilliant future. and life. There was so much new information provided to lawyers and judges and they just didn’t care. He has been in jail for 20 years. It seems that the system is going to fail him once again and will remain in prison until he dies and they just don’t care. How can you do that to a person without feeling no remorse? It is just inexcusable
⭐ As a advocate for Adnan, an avid listener to Serial, Undisclosed and Truth and Justice. I felt this book expanded on the gripping story of Adnan and his unfortunate WRONGFUL incarceration. It’s very well written. Rabia is not only an AMAZING person and advocate, but also a woman with fire. Adnan is lucky to have this woman behind him. Someday soon Adnan will be free and the atrocities that is the Baltimore police will be uncovered.
⭐ Wow. Just wow. I remember first listening to the “Serial” podcast early 2015. I listened to each of the episodes on the series while I was at the gym, on my iphone. I didn’t know anything about the case it was based on, that of Adnan Syed and his ex-girlfriend, for whom he is currently serving a life sentence plus 30 years for her murder. Of course, after listening to the podcast, I did a little research but due to my own studies, that was limited. I then picked up this book, and have to admit it’s been one of the best true crime books that I’ve read in a while. If you’ve listened to Serial, you’ll know that it was 12 episodes, so you would think that that is A LOT of information. It’s not. It’s only a very small portion of Adnan’s case, and that is what Rabia herself has said. This book is soooooo rich in information. Information on Adnan, on his case, on the prosecutions case, on the defense case, on the detectives and police, Adnan’s family, and of course, Adnan’s ethnicity and religion which has played a very important role in his trial. I’m in awe of the amazing job that Rabia has done in the case, and the book, and how enthralling it is to read. I go to 60% through and couldn’t tear myself away from it, having to finish it over an hour and a half, whilst holding onto a full bladder! The flow and style of writing was definitely an absolute pleasure. The release of information was plentiful but manageable, and the way theories and evidence was revealed was fascinating. I really learned a lot about the case, but also about Muslims, which admittedly, I really didn’t know a lot about. So I loved all this information and education. Really, I can’t speak more highly enough about this book. I believe that there could be no better person to be advocating for Adnan, and Rabia has certainly done a spectacular job throwing her time and effort into this. Adnan would be very proud and thankful for it.
⭐ I didn’t listen to ‘Serial’ or any of the podcasts. This book stands on its own. It’s a passionate telling of a gross miscarriage of justice and the friends and relatives that stood by his side (Rabia especially). I hope justice will be served and Adnon freed. I had the same problem reading this on my Kindle as the screenshots were unreadable but they weren’t crucial to understanding the story. I gave this book 5 stars and would recommend it to everyone interested in examining our broken justice system but also anyone interested in the power of faith.
⭐ I like many others was captivated with Serial. I liked the way this book gave a behind the story look at Adnan and Hae as people and the injustice done to both of them. Prejudice is and ugly and dangerous trait. I did not realize how much of this case was built on bias and prejudice. Thank you, Rabia for writing about Adnan and telling his story.
