User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐My professor used this book back in the late 70’s. I thought this was an excellent book. I needed an instructor to work through it. I was an undergraduate in mathematics and this was used in a required course. I could not have worked through this book on my own, not with the level of mathematics maturity I had at the time. I learned a lot from the combination of this book and my professor. I was very happy with the experience of learning advanced calculus from this book. This book is not about applied math, like the Kaplan book

⭐. The Sagan book teaches the Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem while the Kaplan book does not, at least not the 2nd edition of Kaplan, the one I’m familiar with. I have no complaints about the layout of the text, like one other reviewer. This book was also my first introduction to the logical expression of proofs with symbols and set theory, like a backwards E for “there exists” and an upside down A “for all”. This was not just an intro to real variable theory, it was also an into to mathematical proofs with set theory and logic.

⭐This text is an interesting and rigorous presentation of advanced calculus for undergraduate mathematics and applied mathematics students. It is definitely worthy of thorough study; it will prepare the reader for further study of many areas of mathematics and its applications that require a basic knowledge of functions of a real variable or functions of a vector variable. There are many illustrative examples throughout the text.

⭐This book has the wost format of any mathematical text I have ever seen. The author’s favorite Greek letter is small Xi. A page littered with these presents a real mess for the eye to decipher. All his other notation is hard on the eyes. How the author expected this text to be widely used I do not know. Still if you can stand the eye strain this book has some good things in it, but not enough to be worth the effort of thorough study.
