I started out as a schoolboy like Turing, seeking out a computable world, investing a lot of ‘me’ into trying to understand how to make the world work better. The mathematics of incomputability became a wonderful game. When I arriving in Manchester as a research student in 1968, I found Turing’s only PhD student, Professor Robin Gandy, giving lectures on Turing’s work on the emergence of Fibonacci sequences in sunflowers. I was mystified. Now, when so many people are seeking out form beyond form, computation beyond computation, and structure beyond chaos – investigating randomness, human creativity, emergent patterns in nature – we can only wonder that Turing was there before us. So much of what Alan Turing pondered and brought into the light of day – techniques, concepts, speculations – is still valid in our everyday investigations.Turing was a grounded, yet visionary scientist. As well as bringing technical content to the mundane, he brought basic intuition to the technically arcane. M. Turing’s work. S. Barry Cooper is a Professor of Mathematical Logic at the University of Leeds in England and President of the Association Computability in Europe. He is Chair of the Turing Centenary Advisory Committee and a published author of many books and papers. Jan van Leeuwen is a Professor of Computing Science at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. He is a member of the Turing Centenary Advisory Committee and a published author of many journal and conference papers. About the Author Barry Cooper is Professor of Mathematical Logic at the University of Leeds. A graduate of the University of Oxford, his research follows that of Alan Turing in its focus on the nature of mental and physical computation. Author and editor of numerous books, including Computability Theory, New Computational Paradigms, and Computability in Context, he is a leading advocate of multidisciplinary research at the interface between what is known to be computable, and theoretical and practical incomputability. ⭐This is by far the most comprehensive and complete book about Alan Turing.It is an essential element of any collection of works by this famous mathematician, codebreaker and pioneer of computer science.I also recommend ‘The Annotated Turing’, by Charles Petzold.The recent movie ‘Imitation Game’ starring Benedict Cumberbatch has brought increased attention to the work of this pioneer of computers.I believe like Sara Turing (his mother) that Alan’s death was not a suicide, despite the official findings at the inquest.Dr. Nelson Beebe’s bibliography of Turing is cited in this book as a comprehensive source of material written by and about Alan Turing.Occasionally, lecture notes and extracts attributed to Alan Turing have been lost to public view in the sixty years since his untimely death.Alan Turing was a role model for me in my career, encouraged by professors and family members.
⭐This is an excellent compilation of AMT’s work.
⭐Prof. Cooper and Prof. van Leeuwen have done a stellar job in editing this volume on Alan Turing’s work. You get Turing’s key papers, along with several commentaries and reflections by several of the leading scientists in those fields touched by Turing’s work. Worth every penny and eminently readable, a fitting tribute to a truly great mind.
⭐The content of the book is well above my level of understanding. It may however be a 5-star book for a computer specialist. I thought I would read about the life of Alan Turing all throughout the book when I bought it, instead what I have found is a lot of technical information. My mistake!
⭐This has to be the definitive book on all things to do with Alan Turing’s work and legacy.I looked at the contents and saw many aspects of Turing’s work that I would like to know more about…..it was all present in this book. Everything I could think of connected to Alan Turing was there plus lots of things that I didn’t know about……….a superb effort and magnificent compilation.
⭐I had to return this book simply because of its size. I give it 5 stars for the quality, content and massive research that went into it. Just too much for me so bought an alternative book on the subject.
